Water sources

Do you spend the time to hunt over water? OR do you hunt elsewhere? There is a creek running through our property and I found a rub last year directly beside it. Would this be a good place to hunt?

Hard to say if that paticular spot would be good or not. We simply do not have enough information about the area. Rubs are sign post that tells where a buck has been...that does not tell you where he is going to be so you can whack'm.

Them bucks will cruise up and down the creeks looking for does during the rut. I love hunting up aganist the creek when the wind is right.

I viewed an article on hunting water hotspots - If you have hot weather and extreme dry situations - put your stand nearby - could produce! Look for signs!

I always hunt near water. Being that I'm in southern California, water is a gold mine!

Hunting along water and creeks are always good. Deer travel up and down water or creek edges. They feel safer knowing they only have one direction to look for danger. Also in the earlier seasons deer will be around water because of the heat.

I love hunting the bottoms over any other place.

When deer hunting you look for Habitat. Food, Water and Cover.

The area where I hunt in has plenty of water around, its like a magenet with those deer.
They like to be near it, so I'll put a treestand somewhere close by along a well used trail.

One thing deer have to do every day is drink , and bucks follow creek bottoms for both the water and cover while looking for does . A buddy of mine specializes in creek bottoms that run through open farmland , he has some real hawgs on his walls as a result . A creek bottom with rubs is a great place to start with , ponds and lakes are also deer magnets . Look for where the hoofprints come down to the water .
