antlers

i was coming home from work friday and a buck crossed the road in front of me his antlers were already hard and shiny. most of the time they will still have velvet over till sep. or oct. around here in north ms. this is the first time ever that i have seen one this early in the season to have sheded his velvet.

I wonder if he ever dropped his antlers.
That would be my guess.

we had a buck here in indiana that was still in velvet but he lost his boy's on a fence from what the guy said. he was taken near a barb wire fence cattle lot. maybe thats what the deer you saw had happen to him.

I agree, I doubt this buck lost his antlers from last year..had he grown this years set they certainly wouldn't be hard and out of velvet.

yea he must never had dropped his rack its way to early for no velvet. we have a few nice racks that are developed on the farm but all still in velvet.

no matter what a buck has to shed, it hurts them to keep a rack year round thats why they shed otherwise the would be ingrown, deer anatomy, search it!!!!!!

I shot a deer a few years back and it was an eight pointer that dressed out at 203 lbs. It had a rack that was cracked and all pale colored. It had
broken tines and the main beam was cracked down through the middle.
Guess what ? That deer never dropped it's rack that year. Some times even though it is rare some deer and moose do not dropp their rack for what ever reason. I would guess that this is the case here.
