Default Does anyone use decoys during rifle season?

I would like to use my decoy with doe scent to draw a buck out of my swamp. The problem is that the decoy will be visible from the road. Someone would have to take a 500 yard shot over a pasture filled with cattle, but there's always a chance.

Does anyone use a decoy during rifle season or do you figure the deer are too stirred up to follow normal patterns?

i wouldnt unless it was my property...every inch was posted and you let only the select few hunt the land..around here people still hunt the land and will kill the deer right infront of you and nothing gets done 80% of the time...if you know nobody will be there it might be an option but ou are asking this question so i bet someone will see it..and a being visible from the road is not good at all...first day i always see people with a spot light while im getting ready driving around checking the fields for their buck! around here its a brown its down way of hunting for alot of people...i wouldnt do it here! maybe your area is diffrent...

It's my property, it's posted to the hilt, no one else is supposed to be hunting it, but I'm still questioning myself whether to use it or not. From the sound of it, It might make my hunting trip a little too exciting.

Dan O, use it. First of all 500 yards and posted land, then add cattle in...just can't see it being poked at. Are you planning on setting it out in the middle? I have used decoys, they do work. I would set it up in the shadowed side of the field(if possible), near the bush back off and maybe swamp buck will come. Do you have a draw or funnel, you know a natural route the deer follow in and out. Cuz come rut that buck will be in that region and well they love draws and funnels anyway. Even back it off in the woods and set up with the wind right.

I personally am going to use some decoys this year while hunting my swamps . put some mallard decoys out there you know. if the deer ain't moving i may get some ducks. arkansas is great!
I would go ahead a use the deer decoy. i wish i had one. i think it would be worth trying but i don't have enough loose money right now to justify the decoy.

skeeter; My property at the rear is a large semi circle (800 yds long)of swamp edge with 50 yds of bush all around the edge. In the middle of the semi circle is a hill of 20-25' made of limestone. The area from the bush to the top of the hill is mixed with pockets of cedar, hardwood and bare rock for the whole 800 yds. It's open field to the back. The main wildlife (bear, deer etc.) trails are between the hill and the bush at the swamp edge. The main wind direction is from the hill over the swamp. The does live in the woods on the hill; the bucks appear to own little pockets in the swamp (6' cattails/maple. The swamp is 1/2 mile wide and runs 10 miles long.

I'm hoping that a doe decoy positioned on the hill with estrus scent wafting over the swamp may draw them out for a look.

The only decoys I have are Cabela's mallard decoys!

I mainly hunt the WMA's here in Virginia. Man, if you put a deer decoy in a WMA down here, it would get blasted to pieces within 4.7 seconds!!!

I have a very good friend of mine (my old fishing buddy). and I've been trying to coax him back into the woods again. But, he gave up hunting years ago after almost dropping a load in his pants - He was with another friend and they were quietly stalking a deer. They were fine... Blaze orange... The works... Some fool in the woods decided to randomly shoot at noises, and the buddy of mine swears he heard a bullet wizz by him ! That was it. That was the end of it all. My fishing buddy sold all his stuff and never stepped foot in the woods during hunting season again.

To everyone: If you use a deer decoy.... BE CAREFUL!

Decoys? Illegal here. Big time fine in MN if caught using decoys.
