RE: HUNTING DEER BEDING AREA

Hunt in a bedding area - as little as possible. Near a bedding area at the right time is dynamite though (rut). If the open spot is in the middle of the cut and this is where the deer bed (the cut) then your walking right into them. Also unless the wind is blowing up, wind direction will be problematic as I'd guess deer will bed in each direction of this open area! However if this meadow is on the fringe of the cut or bedding area then it really is a staging area or beginning of transition, in this case by all means hunt it with the right wind.

My advise is find their sources, meaning water and food. Then attempt to pattern them by way of trails and movements (AM/PM,etc). Plan for every wind direction, unobstructed routes to various ambush locations and hunker in transition between bed and source. If the area is littered with trails and determining likely routes is near impossible look for funnels, draw, natural lines or trail intersects that will provide more. As rut approachs ease your way back closer to the bedding area keeping the wind in your favor at all times. This also might be a good time to try calling and rattling to lure bucks. (above paragraph isassuming the meadow or open area is infact smack in the middle of the deers bedroom)

I would not hunt a bedding area. Most of the time you will spook the deer. They can smell your scent long after you have left the woods andwill probablybed elsewhere. Besides, in my opinion, deer need a place to go and not be bothered.
