I don't know about NY, but here in Texas I gut 'em where they lay. Scavengers will clean it up quickly and it has never seemed to bother the deer!

If you vaule the taste of your deer then I suggest you field dress it ASAP. If dogs are a concern then maybe bring a trash bag or two out for the innerds, I dunno, but get it field dressed, NOW.

I have gutted deer where they lay, and seen deer feet from the gut pile and it dosent even seem to phase them. The coyotes will take care of the piles.

The last 4 deer we have taken up in the dacks have been gutted where they lay. What we find is that the Crows or Ravens have the mess cleaned up within a few hours. One gut pile was gone in the time it took us to take the deer back to the camp and hang it up, maybe an hour.

I don't like to field dress my deer where I hunt. I take mine back close to the vehicle and do the dirty work. It may not bother the deer but it does bother me to think that it may.

Hopefully you dont have to drag very far. When you are in a mile or so that extra 40 lbs could add up real fast

I can only speak for Texas. I pull my deer away from heavily used pathes and gut them right there. We have many coyotes. Coyotes are some what nomadic and opportunistic. If the food stays there they will, if it isnt they move on. Once they dispatch the intrials they will move on. You would have to gut a deer a day to keep them around. I have never seen a problem with it. I have done it for at least 22 years with no problems.
