Which gun for deer?
 

Here in Wa, I hunt the blacktails. They are not as big and hard to take down as a whitetail or muley but which gun would be the better for them. Ruger .270 or .300 Weatherby?

I probably won't get either one. I just wanna have a good idea at where I stand.

Though both will effectivley take down a deer, I would personally choose the 270.

270 plenty of weapon, flat shooter, less recoil and much cheaper to load. But if you want one gun that can be used for Elk, deer or the likes the 300 would be a better choice for the bigger stuff. if just deer and maybe the odd elk or moose the 270 will work just fine and cost less.

Which one woud I use? Whichever one I shot the best. If I shot both equally well, I'd tend to shade towards the .270--less recoil, for one. Ammo generally cheaper and more available.

Whatever you choose and shoot the best will be more than enough just base your decision on what you shoot and feel the most comfortable with.

The 270 is a clasic deer round and the 300 weatherby is the hammer of Thor.

The 270win is more user friendly and all the power of the weatherby isn't needed for deer . The 300 wthby makes a great elk round but is a bit much for deer ,in my opinion from using it .

Its all personal pref.. It also depends on where you hunt. I personally am fond of a 30-06 because of the versatillity. I have shoot deer with all calb. of guns. Like I said it is personal preference and a matter of conditions. If you go with the 270 you should consider a 30-06. Practically the same gun except you can load a wider range of bullets for a 30-06. I load a 90 grain to hunt varmits and can load a high grain bullets for bigger game.

How can you possibly overkill an animal? Flip a coin, either cartridge is fine.

You could always split the difference and opt for a 300 Winchester Mag.

Of the two you mentioned, the .270 as Halcon said, would be more user friendly and ammo would be cheaper and easier to find!

I HAVE A RUGER M77 .270. EXCELLENT GUN FOR ANYTHING YOU'LL BE DOING. YOU CAN GET WHAT THEY CALL A SAFARI LOAD FROM WEATHERBY FOR THE .270 IF YOU WANT TO HUNT BIGGER THAN DEER. FOR DEER, I USE A 130 GRAIN WINCHESTER SUPREME BALLISTIC SILVERTIP. KNOCKS 'EM DEAD EVERYTIME.

overkill is destroying more of the animal than necessary to kill the animal in a humane fashion.
killing a squirell with a 458 winmag is overkill, hunting deer with a 50bmg is overkill

With good shot placement, there's no such thing as overkill! Shoot 'em in the lungs and you lose nothing! Zero! Zip!!!!
There is no difference in the meat loss from my .308 and 7MM Rem. mag than from my 100 gr. 6MM Rem.
To date, I've never had a &quot;client&quot; :):)<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> complain! That being said, I'll put in a plug for the 7MM-08! It is about as great an all-around deer cartridge as you could ever come up with! Without the &quot;overkill&quot; to your shoulder!

propmahn, unless you are using a varmint type bullet and hitting heavy bone, animals don't generally explode. BTW, I have killed squirrels with a 30-06 without any meat damage at all, so I am sure I could do it with a 458 Win Mag too.

If you don't like excessive recoil as myself, then opt for the .270. You can shoot the 130 grain bullet and kill easily out to 300 yards.

Use that 300 Weatherby on half a dozen deer under normal circumstances and then offer to show Frizzler what overkill looks like. Try shooting that 300 out of a tree stand and that half circle over your eye might look like overkill to you but not Frizzler. Sure if you only have to take dead broadside shots and keep them well behind the shoulder you won't lose any meat. With standard bullets like the Hornady bullets used in the factory loads, especially the 150's you will grind up and bloodshot some meat sooner or later in a big way. When I lived in Washington state we loaded our 30-06's down to 300 savage levels or used 30-30's with perfect results. Get off into the short pines or that vine maple with that 300 Weatherby and I gaurantee you will tear up an unexceptable amout of good eatin venison.

I live in Western Washington, as well, and I would definitely say teh .270 Win is plenty of gun. You simply don't need a .300 Wby to hunt those deer in those conditions. In fact, a .257 Roberts is about perfect!
