i know if there equall on both side there usally typical, but how do they determine that?

"kickers," droptines, and differences in tine numbers, and/or size, usually determines a non-typical. Generally, if there are lots of "deduction" points, the buck will be better off scored as a non-typical!

Sorry guys, differences in the number of tines on opposite sides don't constitute a nontypical.

Whitetail deer have a certain 'normal' arrangement of tines, that being a main beam with individual tines growing off that at intervals. The first is the brow tine, designated G1, then the G2 and so on.

Any departure from this normal arrangement qualifies points as abnormal and they can be used to score negatively (deductions from the typical point score) or positively (added to the net typical score.) If you add them, you're scoring the deer as nontypical.

Points which qualifyinclude anything pointing down (drop tines), anything growing off another point (kickers, split tines), and extra junk in places like near the base.

Getting back to the 2 sides having a different number of typical points (such as a 4x5), the side having the extra point simply will have the measurement of that point deducted from the score since it has no match.

Canuck is correct in terms of B&C the most widely used scoring system by hunters.

The only thing I might add is points/tines that originateon the mainbeamgrowing offto the sides of the main beam(instead of the straight up normal fashion)are also classed as abnormal or nontypical growth according to B&C.(I see canuck meantioned this, sorry. FYI, for a point or tine to be counted in B&C it must measure at least 1" in length.)

In terms of B&C scoring all deer are scored as typical but have a portion on the score sheet for abnormal growth input. If the animals has abnormal growth the individual can chose to add those points(score) in to get a non-typical score as well. This is usually done as suggested when advantegous, bare in mindthe min. requirement does increase with non-typical versions of the species. A hunter must chose which classification the deer will be entered if it meets or exceeds both min. requirements, as it can not be entered in both. Such cases aren't the norm but it can happen.
