at 150 yrds and less they will both do about the same thing (kill deer), out past that i'd rather have the -06, both have killed a bunch of deer, the advantage of the 06 is the extended range, very versitale round, good for about anything in north america, if i were buying id say go with the 06, but if all i had was a 30-30, which is what i and hundreds of others started out with, i would hunt all i wanted just keeping my shots limited to around 150 yrds.

This one of those vague posts that is probably going to be 15 pages and turn ugly pretty soon, soI will agree with m.t.hands. He makes some great points.

I wouldn't use either, they are both illegal where I live. It really depends on what type of hunting you want to do. Both will work well in the right situation.

This honestly all depends on what you want to do with your shots. If you hunt in the woods or are presented withshots 150 yards or less, then go with the 30-30. If your shots are out in the openand a longer shot could present itself, go with the 30-06. If you plan on hunting other game, go with the 30-06.
However, the 30-30 has killed plenty of larger sized animals over many many years. 30-30has killed moose and elk, and you could too, if you made sure that yourshots were within proper range and capabilitiesfor that game.

Personally, I would go with the 06 myself, especially if I was thinking about hunting more types of game besides deer.

i would go with the 30-06 but thats my opinion. it has a little more power and i think it can shoot farther than the 30-30

< than 150 yards, the 30-30 will be OK. >150 yards the '06 or anything from.243 on up will be good!

The draw back of carrying a shorter range gun, is getting presented with a nice deer at longer range!
I had a friend who had a mule-kicker of an '06, so he would always use his 30-30, because his stand was setup for fairly close range shots. I told his that he'd regret it one day! Sure enough, he steps out of his stand and sees a nice buck, shoots and kicks up dirt between the bucks legs!
Moral of the story: darn-near ANY long range caliber will work at CLOSE range, but a short range caliber won't work at long range!
