used to liveand hunt in upstate NY, used an iron sight 30-30. moved out west to washington state, not a chance of succesfully shooting a deer with a 30-30. open rolling hills, not a lot of trees, long shots. last year's buck was killed at 186 yards offhand with my new browning a-bolt 30-06. i would have bought a flatter shooting, longer range rifle but the deal i got on the -06 i couldn't pass up. i think it all depends on what type of country you are hunting in, but i would say go with the -06. you can't go wrong. plus it will be useable for other things should you ever have the opportunity. it is the most popular rifle caliber ever built i believe. deer, elk, bears, whatever. you will be good to go.

at 150 yrds and less they will both do about the same thing (kill deer), out past that i'd rather have the -06, both have killed a bunch of deer, the advantage of the 06 is the extended range, very versitale round, good for about anything in north america, if i were buying id say go with the 06, but if all i had was a 30-30, which is what i and hundreds of others started out with, i would hunt all i wanted just keeping my shots limited to around 150 yrds.

Same thoughts here!

Both will do fine...like others have said, in close quarters (by that i mean within 150 yds) or in the bush the 30-30.....open field & shots beyond 150, the 30-06.

I used a 30-30 to shoot the biggest elk I ever got. It never took a step. For deer I prefer a 270. If I had to pick one rifle for everything no matter where I hunted, it would be the 30-06. It will work for every situation.

I would use the 30-30 for deer hunting the power of the 30-06 just isn't needed. The quick handling of the 30-30 lever actions is more of an advantage than the extra power of the 30-06.As far as distance goes I don't know anyone who consistanlykills big bucks at long range.

Marlin 30-30 Only because it's the only deer rifle I own. Where I hunt a 150 yds is a long ways. All my 30-30 bucks dropped immediately.
