How old is this buck? (pic)

I'm curious to get some opinions on the age of this
buck. We've got a camera set up where a couple trails
come together at a fence crossing, just on the top
edge of a heavily used doe bedding area. My brother
thinks this buck is real old and I tend to
agree. Nutrition is not the problem since the entire
property is surrounded with beans and corn. Is it
possible this buck is old enough that his rack is
this small? <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Thanks for the help.
TB

Sorry for those who could not get a pic...
...I deleted it from Hunting Pictures<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>...
...guess it would help to restore it!

This pic is from central Iowa. I'm sure it is
a young buck, but sure seems like he's got a
lot of white on his face and his belly hangs
a bit too. If he's a old deer, he must have
got lost and wandered over from Nebraska or
Minnesota.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>:)<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'd bet 1.5 years. 2.5 at the most. That's my opinion.

It's kind of hard to tell from the angle. What state are you in and what was the date of the photo? That will help. There is no mass to the rack, the rack is fairly symmetrical, and the neck is not swollen. Without being able to see the buck up close, I'd guess its young, looks like our 2 year olds here in Minnesota.

That deer is only 1 /12 to 2 yrs old.He does'nt appear much older than that

It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

Just assuming by the size of the rack I would say that it is a genetically inferior buck or a young juvenile in its early years, but it does look, very healthy.

I guess 1 1/2. Rack bases look small and the back looks to be flat.

I'd say 1 1/2. looks like an average 1 1/2 year old. The body doesn't look that old, to me anyway.

Not sure about your area but in this part of the world this buck would not be more than 1 1/2 yrs old. depends on genetics and food fr your part of the world but even then would not expect much past this age. good luck

I shot a deer in NJ 2 yrs ago that looked similar--white around eyes/etc and a small tight rack. He was aged at 2 1/2.

Looking at the world from 15 feet up.

In states with small deer, like NJ, he may be 2.5, but in Iowa or any state with a healthy herd, and big deer, he's 1.5. He doesn't look like an older deer on his way out to me. The white around his nose would be way up his face in that case. Just an average, or slighttly small, for Iowa, 1.5yr old.

I'd agree with the rest, I am a also from Central Iowa. He will get much biger, give him three years, than post pics.

Now that I can see the pic I would say 1 1/2, the base of his antlers are still real high on his head and he doesn't have the grey in his face of an old deer. With age the bases of a bucks antlers migrate further down the side of their head.
