Default Hunting from horse back?

DoeDoe said that she likes to hunt from horse back, I have considered this but have never tried it. Does it work well? I have rode right up on top of a couple of does once. I guess my main concern is our horse is still fairly green (and so am I) and appears to maybe get spooked by the deer and the deer likewise, the last thing I want to do land on my back and trash my bow. I guess maybe I should work with the horse. do you shoot from mount or do you just ride him to your stand? If you just ride him to your stand how far away do you have him hitched? Just some questions, and maybe I'll have to try it.<img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

bring home the meat, so we can eat!

you might want to consider what will happen when you shoot, because i am assuming that you mean hunting with a rifle, and our horse is a bit jumpy and he bolts when he hears shots close by

It might pay to find out about the hunting restrictions in your state. I would not be confident about hunting this way until that was checked. To me, it would seem an unfair advantage, as deer are accustumed to seeing horses in pastures, etc. And there is always that hunter out there that could mistake that horse for fair game. It usually takes a well trained horse to allow a person to shoot from the saddle without bolting. We usually bring our horses into the barn during the hunting season as we value their safety.

Hey if you take the time to train your horse and learn to shoot a bow from horse back go for it. I have horses and and my horse is scared of deer and would never stand still and let me take a shot. To me that would be more dangerious and harder than taking a deer from a tree stand. Hunting deer from a horse would be more interesting than setting in a tree stand all day.

redbow, i bet a lot of people dont think that hunting from a stand is hutning the might call it &quot;waiting&quot;. with a horse you are going and looking for the animal.
though i dont have enough land to try it really, i think the most challenging way would be stalking with a bow, that sounds hard.
