the question is very vague... are you asking which state has the most deer? highest success rate? biggest bodies? biggest antelrs?

I would say some of the midwest states like ohio, illinois, iowa and indiana are going to have some of the biggest racks, northern states like maine and minnesota will have the biggest deer... Although there are exceptions...

i agree with you bionicrooster, i just believe that if you want go somewhere where you can expect to see more than a few 150+ deer, south texas would be the place to go.

now, they mat be on a game ranch, but that is where to go.

i would much rather go to the farmland of illinios or ohio, like you said, and hunt though.

I grew up hunting in the woods.....so for me the best state to hunt in is a state with big woods!!! Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota etc, I love hunting in and around an area with big hardwoods! JMO!

Actually whatever state you have a valid license for would be the best state to hunt in! Deer seem to be available in most states and it is fun to hunt - so there you have it hunt in whatever state you want and have fun![8D]

Seriously, the North contrystates -(ME, Northern NY, VT & NH and ME) is where you will find the Old Big Monster Bucks, but you will really have to work for them. The Midwestern states (OH, IN, WI, IL, MO, etc) you'll get some real nice farm fed brutes. Southern states (GA, AL, MS, etc) have incredible limits, so you can get quantity! Texas has bunches, but I believe you have to pretty much buy your way to a good spot (so I've heard - haven't been there - so it's here-say). PA, WVand MI are always good choices, but I thinkthose states have an issue with herd management and it may be a few years until they hold top spots again.
The pacific northwest has great deer hunting as does portions of the southwest, so I guess you can see what I meant by my statements above that wherever you have a license& tags would be the best state to hunt in!

No deer in IL. This was actually the last deer and it was shot off of a golf course because it was a nuisense. Just kidding. IL is alright, I have hunted Kentucky and seen good quantity and a few decent bucks. I havehunted Tx. and seen enough to feed the starving in Africa but they had no genetics. If it came right down to it I would probably hunt anywhere I was allowed because I just cant get enough.

Not Illinois. I have to agree with pjhunts and andrew. No deer here head across the river to Missouri or Iowa lol.

Seriously though I would love to go out west and hunt in Montana or Wyoming. I think they are really underated in what they have to offer.

Texas is overrated. Deer are small, racks are small, the weather is hot, and every plant you'd encounter has thorns or poison. The whole rumor about good deer hunting in Texas was spread by the Texas Mosquito Growers, as they noticed their skeeters performed much betterontourists than natives. And don't forget the killer bees, deer dicks, and fire ants. It's likeeverything out thereis trying to tell you to go away.

I am going to say Michigan. Just all around perfect for my type of hunting. Weather changes alot making the deer move. See a large quantity of deer. Alot of nice racks, and management is doing quiet well.

I take it none of you have hunted in Iowa before? Do you think half the countries professional hunters live in Iowa is by accident? You can't draw tags as a non-resident, and land is beyond plentiful. They have a few deer here too! he he he.....

I would have to agree with Dan and DD It's all about Canada especially Alberta. Big bucks, lots of animals and damn good beer. Hell yes.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to hunt Canada. I'd like to see what a 300 lb. dressed out deer looks like. I also don't know what your definition of "a true trophy" is, but I've taken a 180 class buck (typ.) in Wisconsin anda 150 plus a couple of 140's in Illinois. These spots are from 5 to 30 minutes from my home. I guess my point is that for the money I can spend the whole bow season in Ill. and Wis. for much less than the cost of a Canadian Hunt and have better odds of getting a trophy buck. Simply due to the fact that most Canadian hunts are for about 6 days. I would trade my Wis. gun season for one in Canada though! Anyway, back to the subject, I read in one of the deer mags that Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio and Wis. are producing bigger and more trophies, typ. and non-typ., than anywhere else. Minn. and Kentucky are producing some whoppers as well. My choices are Iowa,Illinois and Wis.

Thats why I'm so lucky to live in Canada but it's the same for me I would give up a week of hunting here to go to Wisconsin of Illinois to shot a nice 150 class whitetail. Dont get me wrong there are alot of big whitetails in Canada but they are so damn hard to find and the chance of getting one are hard unless you scout alot and know the country. Mulies on the other hand their like cattle in alberta. There are some huge bucks too.

As I'm reading this, I ironically have poison ivy and my brother has stepped on a cactus needle....lol everything does tell you to go away! We can hunt bow season in t-shirts and shorts.

I am very biasedI have grown up inand hunted south texas my whole life. Thestate is 95% privatelyowned thus the deer have the oppertunity to grow old and reach their full potential. Now with the popularity of breeding and protein feeding the deer are gettting even bigger. I have always hunted the king and kenedy ranches which are all natural and just have out ragious genetics.

Iowa is the place!

After seeing 300+ deer in 4 days in one county of 2nd season shotgun, holy mackerel. We got took the smallest buck of 7 bucks and it was a "big" 14 point buck with a broad base to boot.
