what do you call a yearling?
I have seen several references to yearling deer weighing 40lbs to 50lbs.Are these really yearlings or are they fawns. The definition of yearling is an animal that is in it's second year.
year·ling (P)Pronunciation Key(yîr l ng)n. [ol][*]An animal that is one year old or has not completed its second year[/ol] |
RE: what do you call a yearling?
Stubby, I've never looked up the definision of "yearling!"
I've always thought of them as being this years newborns! Not as 1 1/2 year olds! I guess I learn something new every-once-in-a-while! |
RE: what do you call a yearling?
I used to think a yearling is this years fawns. But this years fawns are just that a buck fawn or a doe fawn! To me a yearling is a deer that is 1 year or older! JMO!

1. tender!
2. good eatin'! Any deer that was born last year 2004 is what I would call a "yearling" this year. |

Stubble I too have thought the same thing just never shared it. Eaither people just dont know or they dont want to say "i shot a fawn" to their friends. Not that I think that it makes a bad hunter cause uncle matts part 1 and 2 are right on and i know from experiance.

RE: what do you call a yearling?
Technicaly I'm probably wrong but I refer to spotted deer as fawns, youth deer as yearlings. Don't forget that we are in the great white north stubble, from what I here there are some big racked bucks in Texas that aren't much bigger than our dogs.
I call this a yearling, what do you think, fawn? ![]() |
RE: what do you call a yearling?
If the deer is in it's first hunting season, I call it a fawn.
That 2nd year, it's a yearling. When we register a deer in NH, we identify the deer as male/female...adult/fawn. |
RE: what do you call a yearling?
