Scope with target knobs
 

I was interested in buying a new scope with the target knobs so i could adjust for range. I was wandering if anyone uses these and if so do you think one would work well and accuratley at a wide variety of ranges with a 7mm mag.

My only comment would be; This would be good if you had time to make the adjustment such as a long shot and remember a long shot doesn't always mean you have time. I feel you would better off "learning" distances and knowing what your 7MM load does at specificdistances. Probably most important know your maximum shot you can make with accuracy

I have them on a 24X Leupold for hunting woodchucks,not for big game...:eek:

I personally use them only on my target and varmint rifles.I find that there is seldom time to take a range reading and adjust the scope when big game hunting.

Generally you pick your scope accordingly to the type of hunting and terrain you hunt. You hunt big open canyons with long range shooting or thick brushy stuff? You spot and stalk or sit at wait for game to pass by? I find the variable power scopes are great....leave them at the lowest setting in close cover where I hunt whitetail. Crank it up and use a range finder and target knobs in the open canyons for spring bear.

i agree with the others on here but i would like to add 1 thing...be careful when hunting with the target knobs. i dunno how you hunt but in the field my rifle occaisionally takes a beating. the target knobs can easily be hit by limbs and other obstacles you may encounter which might unknowingly change your point of impact. just a thought.

Ya, after beating your rifle, take a quik look at your knobs to see if they are still zero'd.....also good to check your safety

I have tried to use them in the field but the situation never does work for me. Works great at the range. Also, some scopes even the best Ziess, has to be tapped on bacause the springs on the reticles. And still sometimes it takes a shot to actually get the scope to move that MOA you adjusted. Try the window test to see if you scope is capable. Not many are. I find it to be a tough test on scopes

Shoot a group, move up 5MOA and to the left or right 5MOA. Shoot a group, move down 10MOA, shoot a group, move left or right 10MOA, shoot a group, move up 10MOA shoot another group and then move over 5 and down 5 back to original position to see if its back to the original POI. Also tells if your adjustments are actually a MOA or not. I suggest this at 100 yards.

I and several of the guys I hunt and guide with have Leupold 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 VXIII 30mm tubes mounted on .300 & 7MM RUM's, one of the guys shoots the 30-378. The dials are right on. All of us are having great luck with these guns in competition shooting and pack them out in the field. I think I was the most skeptical about trusting the target knobs until watching these guys make some amazing shots over a couple years. More and more people are showing up at our money shoots at ranges to 1000 yrds with the same setups after seeing whatwe are doing.
