What Do You Call Them ?
I see it all the time.
You see a nice rack on a buck. And the first thing out the mouth is big horns. Well that just burns me up. Horns belong on cattle. Meaning hollow inside. Antlers belong on Deer. Meaning solid inside. So What Do Yall Think Should Be The Propper Name ? |

Horns meaning hollow inside and antlers meaning solid inside....never heard it expressed like that....I guess I don't know what I'm talkin' about. (Don't say it....):D I agree with bh14....antlers fall off every year, horns don't. To me, that's the only difference. I could care less which are hollow and which aren't. |
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
I guess it depends on what you are talking about. If you are saying a whitetail buck,,,, Antlers!
|
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
A pronghorn sheds it's horns every year, but they are still horns.

RE: What Do You Call Them ?
I always correct the guys I hunt with and they don’t like it. If they’re antlers, I call them antlers. End of story...[>:]

RE: What Do You Call Them ?
... About Antlers
Antlers grow from the pedicle, a bony platform above the frontal bone of the skull. They begin growing in late April or May, and start branching about two weeks later. By the end of May, they are well developed and covered with "velvet," a covering of skin with nerves and blood vessels. By August, the growth period ends and the velvet begins to dry at the tips. When the antlers are fully hardened, the velvet dies and starts to peel off in shreds. Once it is completely lost, the mating season begins. When mating season is over, the pedicle begins to separate from the skull and breaks off as a complete set when the animal bumps into something. Only a few embryonic cells are left and these form the basis of a new pedicle and antlers, which begin growing about six weeks later. If you visit Sagamore Hill, there is a place outside the library where you can see a set of antlers still attached to the pedicle. ...About Horns Horns, on the other hand, are made up of tubular filaments of keratin, the same substance that makes up human hair and nails. Horns are usually hollow; only the rhinoceros has solid horns (if you look at the base of the White Rhino horn, such as the one a Sagamore Hill hall, you can see where the filaments join). Horns grow throughout an animal's life; however, if the tip or point of a horn breaks for any reason, it will not re-form. Horns have only one point. The exception to this rule is the Pronghorn Antelope of the American plains. Not only do their horns have two points (hence the name Pronghorn), but they also shed their horns on a regular basis. So what about the giraffe? Horns or antlers? The two hairy lumps between the ears of the giraffe are neither antlers nor horns, but two hairy, fleshy lumps between the ears! |
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
Thanks for the info rebel. And I call them antlers
|
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
I've called them both although I'm pretty sure I refer to them as horns in a hunting situation (ex. " .....and I could see part ofhis horn sticking up from behind the log").Never knew anybody that was anal enough to care what they were called--unless it was at a science lecture.

RE: What Do You Call Them ?
You're right hillbilly, but there is a difference between horns and antlers.:)
|
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
I call them both but more often i call them horns. It is easier to say and it really doesn't matter all that much. [/align] |
RE: What Do You Call Them ?

RE: What Do You Call Them ?
Antlers
|
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
antlers are shed and horns are not. Pronghorns only shed the outer layer. the horn is still there, not completely shed.

RE: What Do You Call Them ?
Man you guys are uptight. Does it matter if a guy calls them antenna's as long as you know whathe mean's. Im sure we all use some slang that in certain circles is considered completely incorrect.
|
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
They are without a doubt antlers.
But itdepends on my mood and the situation whether I call them horns or antlers. If I think someone is mentally unstable, and I risk sending him over the edge of sanity by using the term "horns".....Well, I would probably give him a break and call them antlers. C. Davis |

Im sure we all use some slang that in certain circles is considered completely incorrect. To get bent out of shape over "horns," or "antlers," is just way too nit-picky! Horns, antlers, antenna's! It don't make no never-mind to me! It'll start worrying me when someone starts calling them "thing-ee's!":D:D:D |
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
They're antlers so thats what I call them. I don't EVER remember calling them horns. I never thought much of it but it does aggravate me when people call whitetail deer antlers, horns.

RE: What Do You Call Them ?
Yall are crazy, they are antlers but like others have said why trip about it.. I've called them horns many of times but I know they are antler... ie.. look at them herns on that deer right there..[8D]
It's kinda like a truck.. some people, knowing it is a truck, will say things like "it's in my car".. so what if they called the truck a car.. There is one situation similar to this that used to chap my hide.. I used to drive a Jeep Wrangle and others that had things like the Geo Tracker and what not would call them Jeeps too,[:@] that pissed me off a little.. Just because it was disrespect to compare junk to a Jeep.. and what about dip, " I need to stop and get me some dip".. uhh, it's smokeless tobacco. Dip is an action word meaning to dunk and thats it.. ;) |
RE: What Do You Call Them ?
Yall see the "interesting philosophy" thread here.. it talks about a VA shop havving a sign and employees that call them horns.. I wonder if anyone ever complained?
Question: If your shop that you knew gave you your meat and was the best in town called them horns would you quit using them? Of course this question is for the anals only.. |

Especially my old swamp cruiser. C. Davis |
