Doe killing
I heard from one of my hunting partners that some people are shooting doe's and just leaving them lay. It seems the DNR told them if they thin the doe population on their property that the bucks would grow bigger antlers. So at least one person that my hunting partner knew of has already shot 45 doe's on his property and is piling them up to burn them. I personally think this person should be put in jail for a very long time and lose all hunting rights forever, but that is just my personal feelings.
Doe's have meat and this person could have just delivered them to his local locker for HUSH or given them to his friends if he killed them legally of course which from what I am being told he illegally shot them. Not to put a bad name on Hardin County, but I was told on more than one occasion to shoot all the deer I see and take the one's I wanted and leave the rest. I did not do this of course because it is unethical and illegal. I feel the DNR should have instead increased the deer tags available way over the 500 that was available. I can see why the farmers feel the way they do. In 4 days out of 10 that I actually hunted I counted over 400 deer on 10 different farms. The DNR needs to get their heads out of the sand and let hunters take more deer and possibly extend the regular hunting seasons at least in Hardin County. I am sure their are other county's that have the same problem. You can add all the seasons you want, but if the tags are not available to take deer what good does it do to add extra seasons? I also posted this on www.IowaDeer.com I wanted to know what you guys think? |

RE: Doe killing
The person who owns land across the road from me recently had his land searched by the game warden. He was suspected of shooting all sort of deer and throwing them in gulleys. The game warden found nothing. It turns out that it was a rumor started by a neighbor who resents the fact that this guy is an "out-of-stater" who bought the land for deer hunting. I'm not saying that your story isn't true, but its always best to be positive in such instances. In Illinois, they have recently increased the number of deer that people can take, but the population is still growing. I think that they need thinning, not to increase the number of big bucks, but because they are becoming a nuisance. My hometown newspaper now includes a "Deer Accidents" section in its police report because of all the people who hit deer on daily basis. But, like someone else said, thin 'em out, but give the meat to charity or whatever. |
RE: Doe killing
its illegal anywhere, its considered poaching. if you want to thin the doe heard, as we do on our property in central wi, we came up with an idea to only take does during bow season. In wi we have bonus tags that cost $12.00. We will stock up on bonus tags and take as many dry does and does with out fawns untill we have a better buck to doe ratio. On opening day of gun season this year heres my ratio count.
1 buck to 48 does (identified) this is outrageous!!! I knew it was going to be a tough year before bow season even opened up and was scouting and all the does I saw in our fields had twins and tripplets. Late summer my son and I sat in my blind and counted 32 does all had twins and tripplets. There was no Tzone in my area this year and hasnt been since the second year they started the tzones. And the way it looks for next year, there will be no tzones or eab zones. but well see what happens. you think you have alot of does. |
RE: Doe killing
So the DNR is telling people to do this, and some are actually following thru? Or are they acting on thier own accord, in which they should be turned in and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

RE: Doe killing
If there was a real need to take that many does I feel sure the DNR would have issued more doe tags instead of some sort of word of mouth doe slaughter. Contact the local game warden and ask him/her about the rumor. If you have proof of illegal shooting then turn them in. If you know where the does are piled up it would be a lot of help.
