Yep, as the other members stated they blow as well. This means they are aware of your pesents and are sounding the alarm, so to speak.

RE: A rookie question
Thanks for the info. This was the first time I had a deer blow at me---well, maybe the first time I've heard it. I've had does stomp their feet at me, but never had one blow at me. Yea, this actually was a serious question--rookie question!! Thanks, again.

RE: A rookie question
I've been researching whitetails for 10 years, and writing about it. All deer blow as a warning to other deer. If you hear a deer blow at you, and you are downwind of the deer, or you haven't been spotted, and the deer hasn't run off (waving goodbye with it's tail,) hold still. If a deer doesn't see or smell you, and you can hold still for 3 minutes, it will usually forget you are there, or at least where you are. If you see the deer's head go down, begin to drop down to the ground as slowly as you can. Don't move when the deer jerks its head back up, its trying to get you to move (jump) and give your position away. Just stop moving until the deer's head goes down or looks away, then drop slowly further to the ground. I've had deer do this to me, and after 3-4 minutes they went about their business like nothing happened. You can also grunt back at the deer, to make them think you are another deer. The key is that they shouldn't see or smell you. If you have more questions about deer biology, behavior, calls, scents, decoys, rattling, hunting techniques e-mail me at [email protected]. I'll do all I can to help.
