A full moon good for hunting or bad?

I've heard it's bad due to the deer being able to see better at night and will feed all night long.

I pay zero attention to the moon phase. I think many other factors are more important. I just hunt when I can and don't let the moon keep you at home

ive killed deer in every phase of the moon... so i dont buy into the whole moon phase bologna. I go hunting whenever i have a chance regardless of the moon and usually regardless of the weather to thats why i buy good gear.

I've always seen fewer deer during full moons. That said, you can't kill 'em in front of the TV set! I hunt whenever I get the opportunity!

I don't believe in that full moon B.S. It may be true to some extent but like someone else said, "you can't kill one in front of the T.V.

This is a very opinionated question. And I think it has alot to do with where you are. This week is the full moon and I saw 1 deer in 3 days of hunting dark to dark. Yet when I drive home I am seeing deer everywhere. Several of my buddies are saying that they are not seeing deer this week either. Seeing one deer in 3 days of hunting may not be unusual to some but where I hunt I am used to seeing 15-20 or more deer a day. And nothing has changed as far as hunting pressure, food, weather. Just the moon. That's my opinion, I'm looking forward to seeing what others think.

Deer areGOING to move several times each day! How much they move depends on many factors, rut, weather, pressure, food availability, etc! Couple a full moon, with good weather, and most of the activity is going to be at night!

The peak of the rut is during a full moon, do you not hunt then?

I ditto that. However during a full moon I see more at mid day than am or pm .

the deer do go out at night more with a full moon, but will still be out in the morning, but for not aslong. The one thing that will help a full moon night is if it is very cold, because the deer will bed for the night then and come out wiht first light.

Hey DD,
With your luck this year you could hunt a full moon the night before, downpoor the day of, with gas coveredcoveralls with a big crimson tide logo on them, while playing your favorite Lynard Skynard tune on your boombox and eating a tuna sandwhich and STILL take a huge buck from your tree stand

LOL Danny ..well I have been lucky this year so far ...but have not hunted in over a week ... Tennessee has been closed and Alabama is just starting to get going good ... Im not crazy about putting preasure on deer during the full moon unless its the only time I have to hunt .... I did find a nice fresh scrape and a rub on a tree as big as my thigh yesterday while scouting a little here in Alabama ...another week or so and I will be hunting THAT BAD BOY and he best not hope my luck is still running good cause if it is he's TOAST!!

I have always noted fewer deer sightings, especiallyin the morningsduring a full moon. I have said for a few years now that during a full moon I was going to sleep in one day and go in the woods around 9 or 10just to see what happens.....can't bring myself to do it. If I try to sleep in during deer season I wake up feeling guilty and I make a mad dash for my stand!:D

I also observe deer out at night more on full moon nights....I'm sure some of this is due to the fact that I can see better as well.

The peak of the rut is NOT always during a full moon! The rut cycle begins every year within a couple of days forwards, or backwards!
I will always be hunting the rut, if at all possible, but full moon ruts produce fewer deer sightings just as other full moon times!
The best bets for full moons, is a mid-day, or all day hunt!
What do most people do when they party all night? Sleep all day, go to the bathroom, a quick trip to the fridge, and back to bed! Deer do the same thing!

I know that this is blasphemy to my own, "hunt everytimeI get the chance philosephy," but after years of experience I've learned that there are just certain times that the odds are going to be low. Sometimes its just better to "bank" my hunting days, and get other stuff done, so that I can get out there when the odds are better! That said, I'll still hunt the rut, full moon, or not!

RE: A full moon good for hunting or bad?

Who cares when the peak of the rut is anyhow, thats not the best time to hunt, when all the bucks are locked down breeding. Also, there is no question that here the full moon affects the deer, we see few if any deer on both ends of the day, but like yall said...you go to the stand anyhow cuz u just never know.

I hate that full moon, this one time I had the spotlight right on a nice 150 class and that dang thing near blinded me when I put the scope on'em...lol

RE: A full moon good for hunting or bad?

Alot of factors. Prerut, its a bad thing. During the rut, they will move 24/7.Who care about full moon, we all will be in the woods at that point. I am talking bucks here, not worried about does. Post rut, if the weather is good and still alot of folage and stuff to browse on, full moon is bad. But for me, its been snowing alot, and food is hard to come by, so I would still hunt a full moon. They need to browse right now. There's alot of factors that I believe serious hunters need to know. I know I learn more and more every year.

I shot my first deer ever yesterday after a full moon, so I guess they can't be all bad. Three does walked across my food plot at 11:45, and this was the biggest.

Everyone has there own opinions about this, and I have always been a skeptic until this year. There are four people that primarily hunt our property, so this year we kept track of every time someone was in a stand. We stored all the data in an excel spreadsheet. At the end of Nov. I was going through some of the data, as far as moon phases go. During the full moon phase(3 days before to 3 days after the full moon) our deer sighting in the AM almost doubled and in the PM hunts they almost tripled. Also 3/4 of the mature bucks we had seen were seen during the full moon phase. A few more in the PM. Take it for what its worth. I talked to a guy that has been keeping track of this same kind of data for 34 years and he said he has seen the same kind of patterns.

Nobody said you can't kill. And sure does are easy enough, but I believe some on here is referring to a nice buck. Maybe I am wrong.

According to the first post, he said deer. I always assumed that a doe was a deer, but prehaps I'm wrong.

Well, I tried going out a little later and hit it at mid day with the full moon. My results.......................didn't see athing, lol. Not enough for any data, but figure I'd throw it out there. Thanks for all the replies. Looks like most people feel the odds are against you.

IMO, the full moon can actually be an advantage. I'm able to get into the woods earlier and able to see alot more.I have noticed more movement.I usually have scouted the area I hunt prior to opening day and have a time table when certain deer are on the move. The mornings after a full moon nite has altered some of thedeer patterns. Not sure if a coincidence, but sure seems to be related.
