Public Land Hunting Opportunities

I live and hunt in Michigan. I have taken many good deer here but I am interested in trying another state. Any ideas on where I can find another state with relatively good hunting and public land I would easily be able to find some deer on and hunt without an outfitter?

The Blackhills in SD. There is a lot of public land. I mean a LOT. Deer numbers are very high at this time. Check with the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks for regulations and seasons dates.

yeh, agreed with SD, I hunted the Buffalo Gap National Grass lands. deer hunting is very cool out there but for some reason it takes us 3-4 years to get tags for out there.

I think the Blackhills tags are easier to get than the west river prairie.

Welcome LSH. Check out the Wisconsin and Illinois DNR sites. They list all public land with rules, regs and maps. Some great opportunities is Wisco. Do you only gun hunt? I wouldrecommend bowhunting because of the extended seasons, less hunters, etc. Plus you can get a shot at the big ones before the "orange army" comes through.:)
