i need advice on muzzleloaders?
 

i have a thompson center black diamond in 50 cal. i'm using 180 gr.hornady xtp sabots. i have it sighted in out to 100 yards with 2 50 gr. pyrodex pellets. if i were to add 1 more pellet to 150 gr. would it change the point of impact at say 50 yards or much at 100 yards? i'm going hunting this afternoon and i don't have time to shoot it to find out.

It's possible, though I don't think it will change all that much at 50 yds, but at 100, it could change quite a bit. 50 grains is a lot of change in added powder. I'd stick with what you practiced with until you have time to practice with 150 grains. If you're concerned about not having enough power, rest assured that a 50 cal with 100 grains has all the knockdown power you'd need at 100 yds fir deer sized game. I've taken plenty with even 90 grains in my older smoke poles.

I agree with crowpecker,one question though. Is this a mag. gun???? if not don't overload it.only the ones that say mag. should be loaded with that much powder.

In my experience with muzzle loaders anything over about a 100 grains of powder is pretty much a waste in powder anyway.

I lost a lot of accuracy in my Encore when I tried 3 pellets. Backed down to 2 and my groups came together nicely again.

There is no doubt in my mind....it will change your point of impact, possibly dramatically. It would not only be a bad idea as far as accuracy, but is bordering on unethical in my opinion.

remeber that the 45-70 was a good buffalo gun back in the day and it only had 70 grains of powder, so i think that you have plenty of power

berretta-I shoot 240 gr .44 sabot,With a 100 gr of Pyrodex.And i am dead on at 100 yds and 7 1/2 in low at 170 yds.We found the bullet lodged in the oppisite side of the hide in the Elk i got last week.Those partions really do the job.Another 25 grs of powder and it would have been a pass through.But why fix whats not broken.

It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

I say stay with 100. What you'll gain you'll lose sort a speak. I went to 150 gr and lost a lot of accuracy. As far as 100 gr of powder and knock down (I use 240Gr XTP's). I shot a doe at 134 Yards Saturday night (she wasn't small weighed in at 112 lbs caped out). Double lunged her, she jumped 5 feet in the air, took a step and feel on her nose...freezer is full now. I have seen a lot of animals fall to 100 gr and 180-240gr XTP's, so you have plenty of power. In other words stick with what you know and practiced, no sub for good accuracy and shot placement IMO.
