Chances of a BIG buck?
What are the chances of getting a big buck. What states are the big bucks usually in? What kind of management are used for big bucks?
|
RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
There are so many variables that it's really impossible to answer. Nearly all states have spots with large deer. In areas where the deer herd is managed well (usually larger tracts of land), the odds of taking a big buck are very good. In areas with small tracts of land and many different hunters/owners, the big deer tend to be a little harder to come by because people aren't quite aswilling to let bucks walk. The biggest factor influencing a deer's antler size is his age, so herds that are managed so bucks are given a chance to mature will have the biggest average bucks and the best chances of bagging a big buck.
Speaking only for Texas, South Texas is probably the most famous for its deer herd. A lot of managed land produces a lot of quality bucks. The Hill Country is also famous for its deer herd. There are more deer there, but the deer are usually smaller. East Texas isn't as famous for great hunting, but there is still a lot of great hunting to be had there. The Rolling Plains of North Texas, well hunting is just bad. I wouldn't recommend anyone wasting their time coming to hunt here. Yep, its just not worth it. I never see any deer, and the bigs ones are just hard to come by. No need in anyone hunting here.;) |

RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
There are many management units where you can only shoot bucks with 3 points on one antler or sometimes 4 points on one antler.... That had helped my area

RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
hey buckhunter, we have regular management areas and type 2 management areas. the regular management areas are open to anyone with a management stamp...the type 2's are computer drawn through an application process. alot of our type 2 areas are going to the 3 on one side next year.
was there a big improvement in quality in your area when this took effect? |
RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
According to North American Whitetail magazine the chances of the average hunter taking a B&C buck is .005 percent and if you hunt an area that is known for big bucks like Alberta, Illinois, Iowa or Wisconsin your oddsgo WAY up to .05 percent !

RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
I can tell you one thing I have learned after 25 years in the woods here in north Alabama and southern Tennessee ...you can't harvest a MONSTER buck where there are no monster bucks and thats a fact ! I have read on another thread about a lot of the fine hunters on this forum who pass up big bucks knowing that there is a good chance they will see him next year when he is a year older and larger and I commend them for their strong will ...and it must be nice to hunt in a state or an area that is large enough to feel you will have that chance to hunt him again ...however here in Alabama and Tennessee most of us do not have that luxury ...most of the farms here are quite small 150 to 250 acres with hunting farmsbordering you on either sideand the bucks very seldom get a chance to mature ..oh you occationally here of a big buck being taken ..or seen or hit by a car at night but on the most part they get wacked by someone before they get any age on them... so the chances of ever taking a really BIG BUCK in my neck of the woods are EXTREAMY limited ... on the bright side we do enjoy big numbers of deer and if you like seeing a lot of deer then this is a great area ...

RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
same here DD...and to answer your question, why ofcourse i'd hunt with you in all those places......if you pay:D

RE: Chances of a BIG buck?
Same here DD. The place I hunt is my grandpa's 200 acres and it is poached all the time. We don't allow other hunters to hunt it, but they do anyways, and when you say something to them, they cut your fences or kill your cattle. My place behind my house is only 20 acres, and I have a few food plots where some deer come in. I have been having a little 6 point coming in every year and gets bigger. He is an eight this year, I think its the same deer. I'm hoping nobody shoots him. Everybody here shoots everything from a spike and up. I went to the processors and saw over a 100 deer heads of very young bucks. I used to be like that until I fortunly got a 160 class 15 point this year. He was old, and pretty beat up from other bucks. Don't know where he come from. I get depressed because everyone tells me I will never get a bigger buck in this area. I'm guessing I have to pay outa state tags and go elsewhere.
DD I love your buck! |
