Default black deer?

Before everyone jumps all over this post...I was driving today and I caught a quick glimpse of whatI thought was a black deer (whitetail deer with a black body). It was about a 1/4 mile away, but the field was covered in snow and the thing looked as black as could be and ran like a deer. So, has anyone seen what looks like a black deer or am I just seeing things?

You weren't seeing things. Someone posted pics of one in this forum a while back. There is a name for the condition, but I can't remember off-hand. Somebody else will probably know for sure.

A black deer, or melanistic deer is rarer than a true albino let alone a white deer. You might have been mistaken or not but they do exist....

Yep, melanistic deer, I saw one up in the hill country laying by the road, nice buck to, black as coal.
