Yep, there oughta be a law against that. I bet the media would go crazy if I led the charge in a ditch down in Crawford with 25 or 30 supporters.

I know where he is but he wont answer phone calls so short of heading to th up to try and talk to him face to face i dont know what to do unless I can get someone who knows him to get the word to him and hopefully he will be a man and get in touch with me.

the story? ok well here it is. i worked that day and got home at around 3:30 and wanted to go out hunting so i grabbed my 30-30 and headed out onto the mine dumps near buhl in northern mn. i like to walk the edge of the old mine dumps because you can look over the edge for deer down below. after about an hour i saw this deer at about 130 yards down below me. i could tell right away he was big so i pulled up and shot. he wheeled around and ran. when he turned to run he looked like a longhorn steer. i jacke another round in and took one more shot before he disappeared into the brush. i was pretty excited as this was the first mature whitetail i had ever seen while hunting. i climbed down the side of the dump and walked over to where he was standing on the first shot. there was no blood. i felt sick thinking i had missed but i was pretty sure i had hit him by the way he reacted to the shot. i went over to where he had been on the second shot and still no blood. then i walked over to where i had lost sight of him as he entered the brush and it looked like some one had driven a harley through the brush at around 60 mph. there were gouges in the trees and broken limbs and brush. it was easy to follow his trail i walked along it looking for blood and after about 30 yards i found 1 spot the size of a dime. I was so happy that i hadnt missed!!! after another 20 yards i saw him piled up in a tag alder bush. he was huge!!! I called my buddys and told them i needed help to get him out. it took 4 guys and a 4 wheeler to get him out of there. we got him hung up and the next evening i wanted to go weigh and register it so we took it to town and the store we brought it to didnt have a scale but there were alot of people looking at the deer. one of those people was rob douglas. he asked me what i was going to do with it. I told him i was going to cut the rack off and put it on a plaque because the main beam was broken. he told me he was a taxidermist and could fix the beam and mount it for me i still didnt want to mount it but he said in exchange for the cape he would fix the beam and mount the rack on a plaque for me and i agreed. the next day i took it over to his place and he caped it out. that was the last time i ever saw it. on the way over there we stopped and weighed the deer. he weighed 236 lbs. I also measured the spread and it was just a hair over 24 inches on the INSIDE!! well anyway a while went by and i hadnt heard from him so i tried getting ahold of him and found out he had moved and ever since then i have been tracking him from place to place and trying to call him to get it back. I know i could take him to small claims court and win. I had witnesses to the original conversation as well as to him taking the cape. but i dont want any money! I want my trophy back!!! so basicaly that is the story. so if any one who knows him sees this PLEASE do the right thing and get me in touch with him!!

I would like some more facts shorty! Did you leave a down payment, most taxidermist will not even start without one. Did you follow up a year later, it is his responsiblilty to contact you, but after a year I would've tracked him down. It's been four years, even if he has it, it might be legally his by now, andhe can probably charge you all kinds of storage fees and stuff. You would be suprised athow many people don't pick up mounts so I would deffinetly get in touch with him, one to one, before draggin his name threw thedirt!!
Go Get Your Buck!!!

dave, no i didnt give him a deposit. i paid in full! i gave him the cape with a 24" neck which he promptly sold on ebay for over 200 dollars. and i did check in with him. he had moved so i called him after tracking his number down and he told me he would call me back and didnt. since then he hasnt answered a call. I also had a local taxidermist who got ahold of him for me and told him that i wanted my rack back and he told him he would ship it to him and he never did. i am in no way at fault in any way for him taking off with my rack! i have since been informed that he sells alot of stuff on ebay and I am just hoping he didnt sell my rack. all i want is my antlers back. how could he charge storage fees for something he wont give back? I still have the same phone number as i did back then and he has NEVER called me. If he called me today I would make arrangements to pay to have my antlers shipped to me.

Now that I have the facts I feel for you man! I have been so nervous from your post I've called my taxidermist twice this week. I'm using a new taxi to change up my mounts a little, he is highly recomended though. Good luck on catching him, get out there and tag another!

Yep, call the sheriff or local conversation officer. They'll get a answer at least one way or the other.

I know the laws differ in each state but let me tell you a story that happend here in Alabama that might help you. I worked for a car dealership for several years in Tuscumbia Alabama. The store has a lot of deer hunters and on inparticular was fairly notorious for wacking anything that walked ..he worked in the service department. There was one morning when he went hunting before work and when he showed up for work he had a MONSTER 8pt strapped to his 4 wheeler. He came in and naturally started telling everyone the story as to how he killed this monster buck .. I mean the story was very good and he told it in detail ... after admiring his trophy I went back up front ... about 2 hrs later there were two police cars AND a Game Warden that pulled up... they proceed to go back into the shop and about 10 min later they were leading this tech out in handcuffs ... they loaded his trophy in the back of the Gw's truck and left ... well to make a long story short this is what REALLY happened ... he had hunted that morning ..he had heard a shot and decided to check it out ( they were on public land ) ...as he road up and old field road he found a hunter trying to drag the buck out so he stopped ...asked if the hunter would like for him to carry the deer out on his 4 wheeler... they where about a half mile away from the trucks so the hunter said yes and the guy put the buck on his 4 wheeler and proceeded to steal it ... just so happend someone at the nearest gas station saw this buck on the backhistruck ..and after hearing someone else tell what had happened he called the GW and told him who he thought had stolen the buck ...he was arrested and charged with grand theft ... I bet the same thing would be true for this Taxie ... anything over the value of $100.00 is grand theft and you said he sold just the cape for $200.00 ... I would file a warrent agenst him ...just a thought!

Also try the better buisness bureau. Never had a mount done but i assume they need a license for it. It may be why he moved to begin with. he had to many complaints.
talk to a lawyer, see what they have to say. You may be intitled to what you payed plus any losses. go after him. If you don't want to go that far then you might as well just let it be and chalk it up to a loss.
It's up to you now to make up your mind how far you want to take this in order to get refunded on money and losses. Odds are he does not even have that rack anymore.

Whats the point of shooting a deer if you arent going to drive around and show him off a bit.I hate it when people hide their deer, be proud of those bad boys

I think he may have been referring to Doctor's post. Anyway the guy you're dealing with is a major scumbag and unfortunately he probably did ebay the antlers already for some good money. Press charges on him and pursue it. Don't let him get away with it!

i just dont understand why someone would want to steal someone elses mount. they didn't kill it so theres nothing to be proud off. if i were you i would find out where he is at and go there. and dont call and let him know your coming.

RE: another picture of the rack that was stolen

If you could finally find where the mount is, I would take all the pictures you have of the deer and prove without too much trouble it was yours. Who knows, you may find it ina Gander Mountain, a Bass Pro Shop, or worse yet, over the fireplace in a Cracker Barrel.Show the corporate head quarters of those companies your evidence, and you will have your mount back without too much trouble. Just hope you don't find it in a Cracker Barrelbecause I have seen some pretty bad taxidermy work there.

Just a thought.

I noticed that in our local Gander Mountain, they have the name of the taxidermist posted under most of their mounts.

Maybe you should hit the message board/forum that has categories listed state by state. You may have better luck being able to talk to folks that are from your state only.

I'm not sure if I'm able to post the link or not (bad experiences on racing boards), but feel free to drop me an email if you'd like.
