Maximum range of "00" and deer?
I never shot at a deer using a shotgun and hope you can answer this question for me. What is the maximum safe range for good kill shot on a deer with “00” load using a 12 ga and a 20 ga?

DEPENDS ON THE GUN CHOKE AND HOW IT PATTERNS, When i use buckshot i use 3in.#1 mags with a xtra full choke. The buckshot can be deadly way out there,but to make a clean humane kill on deer don't shoot more than 40 yards and thats pushing it. Try and hunt a spot that your shot will be 20 yards or less.

I'd agree that after 40 yards, your pushing it! The bad thing about buckshot, is it doesn't expand, so if the deer runs off, you probably won't have a good blood trail! I think they have banned buckshot on public lands here in Tx.

BTW, if your going to use buckshot, you might try #1 or #3 buck, it patterns better than 00! 00 buck is .30 cal. and will travel further, but the small number of shot, patterns terribly! While if I remember right, #3 buck is .24 cal. and holds together much better!

They don't sell Foster(rifled) type slugs in Va. ?
 I get very good accuracy with them from my 20 ga. smoothbore with a modified choke . A 3/4-1 oz. slug trumps a bunch of overgrown BBs any day for stopping power and you'll get far less damage to the meat and hide. |
