RE: Best long range deer caliber
My first choice would be the 308 with the 7mm Rem. Mag. as a close second.

RE: Best long range deer caliber
Well, to be honest with you I hope no one ever shoots at a deer at 200 yards. I've been hunting for a while now (years) and I shoot a 7mm. Even though that gun is capable of dropping a person at 1000 yards, I don't feel comfortable shooting at a deer no further than 100 yards but that is just me. I've seen alot of deer wounded and have had my hunt ruined by ignorant hunters that think they are a sniper in the movies.
But to answer your question, my father-in-law has a bullestics book and according to the book there a few guns tested. a .243, 270, 3006, 7mm and a 300 mag. They were tested with the best ammo for the gun. What I mean is the "best" ammo for that particular caliber of gun was chosen. They testest accuracy from 20 out to 500 yards and power ( i believe it was pounds per sq inch) To make a long story short, the 7mm was the best overall choice with bullestic silver tip shells. It was the flattest shooting, and at distances of 500 yards it was more accurate than the rest, it didn't have the knock down power of the 300 at 500 yards but it was pretty darn close. Before I knew all this, I bought a 7mm, what luck!! |

I think it might be you that watches too many movies. |
RE: Best long range deer caliber
IMHO any cal. mentioned here would kill a deer if shot placement was right at 200 yrds but IMHO70% of the people on this topic could place a shot right at 200 yrds and maybe 30% at 300 yrds and I am not one of them so I don't try it. Out past 200 yrds? Not me, Iwould stock him and get much closer fora muchbetter quality shot! It's all in what cal. you like and feel comfortable with. Just my .02 worth

RE: Best long range deer caliber
Wow a lot of great story tellersputting their thoughts (me included) into this question. Nice to see that, like mostconversations people sink their credibility as soon as they open their mouths. Simply amazing!
Now back to the question. I personnally shoot a 7mm STW (8mm Remington Magnecked down to the 7mm). I hate recoil so I loaded up for deer 120gr Barnes X bullets which are leaving the barrel at approx 3400 fps. Flat shooter, accurate that gets the job done very efficiently. You might question the "hate recoil" and wonder why the huge case? It was to get that little bullet out quick and as flat as possible. Going into the 160 gr bullet range I take a thumping and it is not needed for deer. My Elk/Moose load I opted for a 140gr Barnes X to reduce recoil but still retaining a slightly heavier bullet for the bigger thicker bonedanimal. Shoot a calibrethat you can personaly handle accuratly and never shoot beyond your capabilities! |

RE: Best long range deer caliber
well now! you knew everybody had a favorite. Mine is a 30-06 also. remi 742.
As far as flat shooting andcarry the distance...270....no doubt. 30-06 has more ofan arch than flat. Dropped deer at300 with both. |
RE: Best long range deer caliber
go with the 30-06.
|
RE: Best long range deer caliber
hands down 308 norma

But your the one scarring me a bit here...... First off let me point out something.....Your cautious attidude although in good judgement leads me and I think some other people on this forum to raise a RED FLAG...... Properly sighted in any of these calibers mentioned would easily reach out to 200yrds and some farther without the bullet going no more than 3"or 4.5 inches above or below your line of sight from 0 to 300yrds...All you should have to do is put your sights on target and pull the trigger......There is more than enough energy behind any of these calibers to be suffient to put down the animal it comes down to shot placement and bullet choice......... This leads me to believe you need to practice at the range..... |
RE: Best long range deer caliber
i just can't believe ppl actually shoot out past 100 yards. my bro in law tells the same story every christmas about how he shot a deer at 275 yards with a 243 with no rest. Impressive yes, but safe, not for th edeer, He could have wounded it, missed it. If i can't call a deer in to under a distance to where i can shoot without needed a rest, then I am not shooting. If I have to have a rest to shoot then thats too far for me to try.
|
RE: Best long range deer caliber
30-06 wouldnt be a bad choice but it is a slightly heavy bullet. A .270 is a very good flat shooting powerful gun.

He He !
My 9 year old son took his first deer yesterday, a spike ,with my well equipped .243, it was at 205 yds. I told him to hit the shoulder and he hit a little high, dropped him in his tracks, he also dropped a javelina at 120 yds, 2 one shot kills. couple of threads to follow on this subject. .243 on the small side, JamesB ? wait till you see the pic. He He ! |

I tell you what.If we put a baseball up at 100 yards and you shot five timesoffhand and them we put that same baseball up at 300 yards and I shot five tomesat it with a rest,do you think that you could hit the ball more times than I could? |

RE: Best long range deer caliber
Limiting yourself to a maximum distance of 100 yards is just plain retarted. You shoot the most "accurate" gun ever, the 7mm, and your obviously a "professional" shooter since you are military.
I'd put money I could shoot a tighter 3 shot group at 300 yards than you could at 100 yards. You said you've been deer hunting for a few years, I'm on my 10th year of deer hunting, and I have missed a few deer, not many. We could compare number of kills, and we'll see when you reach as high as me, if your hit/miss ratio is still the same. I want to hunt with you, when that monster 30pt buck steps out at 105 yards, he would be all mine! [:-] BTW - I have never wounded or lost an animal in all my years of hunting and shooting well beyond 300 yards. |

Yep, I'm dropping this subject. G'luck with your season.
You might want to ask my buddies if I have no respect for big game or them. So far this season I have put 3 of my buddies on deer, all scored over 130" I understand we all have our limitations when it comes to shooting. I sight my rifle in by shooting at 100 yards. Then I set out 20 ounce/ 1 Liter/ 2 Liter/ gallon jugs full of water out to 450 yards and bang away. Its not only a great way to sharpen your skills, its a fun competition with friends. Again g'luck with your season, sorry to have stepped on your toes. |
RE: Best long range deer caliber
All I was doing was stating my opinion until you and the other guy wanted to tell me that just because I kept my distances short, that I was retarded. I've never heard such ignorance. You two are being very hypocritical, if you say that about my 100 yards, then its no different than you and your 300 yards. I don't like the idea of ppl shooting over 100 yards, but if you can do it then good but don't talk down on me because I choose not to shoot that far.

RE: Best long range deer caliber
So you would have no trouble beating these 100 yard groups with your 7mm that is so accurate.

RE: Best long range deer caliber
even if I had a digital camera, I wouldn't waste my time. Grow up. Do you know how ridiculas you two are? when i go deer hunting I am not concerned with "oh man I hope I see one 500 yards out so I can shoot at it" I am concerned with killing a deer. what don't you two go to a target shooting forum. I deer hunt, I'll kill deer regardless of the distance being that its under 100 yards. this is my comfort zone and I will not jeopardize the deer's health or my hunt or other hunters around me because I want to play sniper. if I can't see what the deer is without a scope or binoculars then its out of range for me. Bottom line.

I respect your choice not to shoot beyond 100 yards. I was pointing out that in some cases, it is not practical. Setting your limits short is certainly better than streching your limits.

RE: Best long range deer caliber
So what if ya have a 7mm.....You have now clue how it yours shoots past 100yrds in the field...... But make a note, I'll assure you that if I am in dyer need of meat, my family is dieing and I've been snowed in, there is a epidemic of hunger going around and the closest deer I see is 500 yards away, I'll make sure my MOAs are lined up, I'll make sure that my POA and Windage/Elevation are correct and then I'll attempt to kill him. |

utmstudent....Thanks for the spelling correction.....
You still havn't made up your mind have ya........ TO TELL YA THE TRUTH YOU LOST ME...... I've got better thing to do like shoot tht BIG MONSTER30 PLUS INCH MULE DEER BUCK I DREAMT ABOUT LAST NIGHT at 247yrds nodoubt.....:D But being the good natured fellow I am:D I willing to hand you either a X-LAX to help you with that CONSTIPATION or hand feed yoy an IMODIUM to cure those RUNS...... You said "I don't dare feel comfortable shooting animals out past 100yrds.." "If I can't call them in to a safe distance to shoot where I don't need a rest...Then I'm not shooting...." BUT NOW THERE IS AN IF......:D In none of you posts did you DARE MENTION practicingat shooting paper targets out to 300 yrds until just now.. YOUR FATHER IN LAW has a ballistics book....and that the 7mm has the best ballistics out to the 500 yrd range. Again you say the 7mm is the most accurate long range gun the Ballistic BOOK proves it..... There is NO mention of practicing shooting your gun past 100yrds..... "I STAND BY MY WORD I WILL NOT TAKE A SHOT PAST 100yrds" AGAIN......NOW THERE IS AN IF.....:D I CALL IT MORAL TOWARDS ANIMALS, NOBEL,HIGH MINDED,,ELEVATED, PROPER,ETHICAL,RIGHTEOUS,and/or PRINCIPLED....... AGAIN......AN IF......:D SO WHICH DO YOU NEED utmstdent....THE IMODIUM OR THE X-LAX.. |

You made positively, absolutely no sense in your whole response. Nothing educational about the subject I am talking about was mentioned, just immature comments that a 3rd grader could have came up with. How about that imodium you have? Hey, I'll tell you what sniper, good luck with that 247 pound man you "dreamt" about. Good luck shooting .000000000001 inch groups at 5,000 yards. Because, and pay attention because this is the real kicker, I COULD CARE LESS, as I've said many times over. I shoot at a comfortable range, I am happy with that, I have killed my limit in bucks the past 5 years by doing this, I've never missed, I've never wounded a deer, I've never screwed up someone else's hunt. Like I said above, I've never seen a deer out 200 yards before. Like I said above, maybe its just the place I am hunting, maybe I put my stand in a good spot. Maybe I value animal life more than you, maybe I am not some marksman/sniper/dude like you. Shoot the tick off the **** wagon at 8798697685 yards, like I really care. I'm killing what I need at 100 yards or less and that’s getting the job done. Why change? BTW, as careless as you are about your grammar problem, how can you kill a deer at 300 yards? Are you that careless with shooting deer? I hope not. GOOD LUCK SNIPER |
