Need some help, just started hunting from a stand.

This is my first year hunting from a stand in KY. Have always hunted from the ground. The first deer I had a shot at I missed. Where should I be aiming 16-20 ft. in a stand. The deer was probably 10-15 yds away and my rifle is sighted in at 50 yds. Hunting in thick cover. Can anyone help me here?

Man I think you just missed...I don't think that 16-20 ft. of elevation will change the trajectory of a bullet enough to make you aim low/high at only 15 yards.

You said that you were in thick cover. Is it possible that the bullet deflected off of a twig? I've shot a deer or two from a treestand with a rifle, I just put it right behind the shoulder and they drop every time.

It sounds like you missd completely you might want to sight it in from a tree stand than from the ground that is what I do with my bow cause I have never shot my bow at a deer from the ground just a stand. just a thought

Gun is sigted in dead on at 50 yds. I put the cross-hairs on the deer just behind the shoulder blade, about center mass. Got out of the stand, no blood at all. Dunno what hapened I guess, maybe I pulled the trigger instead of squeazing it. I made a doe bleat and it ran in at full speed. I might have just got too excited and made a bad shot.

As close as the deer was and the height of the tower blind had nothing to due with it. when you were about to take the shot were you thinking about where to hold? 9 out of 10 times if you're not comfortable with the hold/shot you will not make a good shot. That's why the always say focus on one spot...like you are trying to look thru the animal.

A common saying with bowhunters is "aim for the exit hole"! I use the same thought when I'm using a gun as well.
