Well the new Ultra Slug gun got a chance to draw first blood on opening day. I took this 7 point yesterday just as the light was fading. Maybe 25 yards from my blind. I had to yell to get him to stop
. It had been raining off and on all day, and right after I shot him it started raining like crazy with thunder and lighting. So no blood trail. He ran about 60 yards and jumped a wire fence.
Me and a couple of friends walke around in the woods he went in for a few hours in the pouring rain but didn't see anything. Of course sometimes it was hard to see in front of your face because it was raining so hard. I even got lost once[
]. I went back today and saw him before I even went over the fence. He went about 30 or 40 yards after jumping the fence and died. I thought how in the heck did we miss that! I bet one of us almost tripped over him.
I don't think I will ever hunt in that kind of weather again. I went home thinking maybe I missed him, but I actually got a pretty shot, right where I aimed. I took out the top of the heart and and the lungs were in pieces with the slug passing thru the deer. Yet he still ran almost 100 yards!

Should have been a 10 point, but the rack was broken on one side.
This is the deer my buddy shot on the same property today after I found mine.

So I think the H&R works, I wish the deer would have went down quicker though. I was using brenneke gold magnums. He used a 870 cantilever with winchester supreme saboted slugs (one ounce). I think his went about 60 yards.

Looks like 2 nice shots as well.
I've seen deer hit double-lung with a slug still make it 200 yards. Sometimes I am amazed at how far they can make it, even with the damage a slug can do.

Hey - 2 very nice deer! Looks like both shots were well placed.Amazing how those animals can take a heart lung shot and run 50-100+yrds.
I just bought a 20g ultra.Haven't had a chance to sight in yet.I've heard they are real tack drivers.
