RE: Best caliber for under 100 yards ?

So, you would like somthing more powerful, but your shots usually only allow you 50 to 100 yrd.

When I first started reading your post I was going to suggest a, 243. I don't know if you have ever owned one or taken deer with one but at 100 yrds or less it does the job very effectively on deer.

Back to the power issue, your 30-30 is a good gun for what you are wanting, try a soft point with 180 gr.

If you really want to change guns look into a 30-06 or a 7mm.

save your self some money and try experimenting with other 30-30 rounds.

Good luck!

I dont know for sure but my dad uses a .44 rifle and say the deer dont run after being hit with it. kind like throwing a concrete block at hit at a hundred mile per hour if you ask me.

bring home the meat, so we can eat!

I prefer a 270 rem. bolt action using a 140 gr. load..

This is a very good gun as well.

Under a 100 they all work fine, I would just stick with ole faithful. Bullets are cheap, easy to find can go up or down.

If you just need something, then 308, 35 whelan, 3006, 7mm, 300 win, 300WSM, 270, 280, 7mm08, etc...get my drift it don't matter.

A Ruger .44mag does the job under 100 yds & a Remington 870 12 guage pump with slugs also works tremendously...just my humble opinion as i've used both with much success.........Brampton Mike

For under 100 yards, the 30-30 has more than enough knock down power for any deer alive. I have a friend that hunts elk exclusively with a 30-30. He just keeps his shots to under 150 yards.

If you really have your heart set on something "new", I would recommend a 270 or 30-06. They do have better trajectory, although for shots less than 100 yards that really isn't a factor either.

How about going with a blackpowder? A 50 caliber would be a good choice.

Good luck

If you want a new guy to mess with, get a 50 caliber muzzleloader.
