Any good things to eat while in the stand?

Well next weekend is going to be my first weekend of deer hunting with a shotgun. I have the shower kit and the soap for my gear to keep the scent down but what I have not been able to figure out is what is good to eat while sitting in your stand? I am afraid of using any kind of vegtable or fruit incase the DNR comes and things I am trying to bait instead of eat. I just have a high matabolsim rate, and I get hungry about every 2 hours even if I have a huge meal. I am just trying to find something to help me out for the 5+ hour spand in the morning so I do not have a huge headache about 3 hour in. I was thinking some Jerky will I thought of how strong the smell was of it.

Thanks for any help on this last little issue.

I dont know about things to eat in ur stand tonot be hungry,BUT I do know something you can eat to stay WARM. those little cinnamon gummy bears can make a person sweat in their treestand even if its 15 degrees out. Ive done it, and so has my brothers. it works, plus they taste good too.

I usually take some rice cakes out. Seems to do the trick.

Sounds like you need to pack a roll of toilet paper:D.

I'm a big eater, too. However, I usually just tough it out or go back to camp for lunch. An open-face Dagwood. Ham, Genoa Salami and swiss melted on the broiler....mmm, mmmm.

I eat candy bars to hold me over, or breakfast bars. I also keep some sort of fluids in my pack for those long hauls.

I eat beef jerky, slim jims, choc covered peanuts or plain penuts, protein bars, breakfast bars. I try to look for something with high protien most of the time. That will help cure a hunggry stomach. Some other things are triail mix, granola bars.

I like to take a couple of packs of sunflower seeds to the stand with me ... kind of helps me kill time and also helps me focus ...

Hey Veener,
I wouldn't worry too much about the DNR thinking you are baiting if you have some fruit or veggies to nibble on and to help you stay warm. Now if you carried an entire sack of carrots or something that might be a different story!
I usually take some fruit or granola bars, and a PBJ sandwich to keep the calories up and keep warm. If it's especially cold, I sometimes will bring a small thermos of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
Yeah I know they all produce scent, but when it gets so cold that I can no longer sit still, it's time to take a break and drink a hot liquid, then I can sit still and concentrate on looking for deer.
As for the smell, a few years ago the temps were in the single digits and the wind blowing steady, and I needed a quick warm up. I had just poured a cup of coffee and a 7 pointer came in right behind my stand and downwind of me. He either didn't smell it or didn't care, and stood there broadside for an easy 40 yard shot.
Anybody else have a similar experience?

Thanks,

So it seems like from what I read deer just hate human scent. Past that they do not care I guess.

Trail mix and dry cereal. I like golden grahms;). I might take some pop tarts as well, I just eat them cold. I may take a sandwhich or some crackers as well. Those lunchables are pretty good too.

I usually end up going home for lunch though. I live a few minutes from where I hunt so sometimes I go home to grab a quick lunch and go to the bathroom.

With this being my first year I hope to have the deer jerky next year. Right now I just picked up some slim jims though.

99% of the time I tough it out and don't bring any food/drinks to the stand. I'll have a gatorade in the truck and take a few big gulps before I hit the stand but otherwise, nothing. Maybe this year I'll take some Slim Jim's but make sure to spray them with some Scent-Lok.:D

You don't eat or drink anything all day? During gun season I sit in my blind from sun up to sun down if can. If I am just going to be out for a few hours I don't bother with anything. But if I go all day without eating or drinking I think I would pass out. I certainly wouldn't be able to make a good shot or drag a deer if I had to.

I have a really fast metabilism though.

Oh no, I don't sit out there for the duration. I hunt from sun-up to about 10-11, go for breakfast and sit until about 1, then head back out until sun-down.

Oh ok, so you are leaving to eat lunch then. That is what I do sometimes since I hunt so close to home. Especially if I have to use the bathroom. I don't mind peeing in a bottle, but I'm not crapping in the woods unless I have to;).

Opening day though I'm getting in my blind at 5:30 in the morning and not leaving until the sun goes down. My blind is pretty nice though, it is sealed to the elements and I have a small heater. I also have a padded swivel bar stool with glass windows on every side. It's not like I'm sitting in tree stand during crappy weather or anything.

Well, in that case, you might as well nickname your stand "The Condo" like we have in one of our permamnent stands. Although I must say, it is not a cosy compared to yours. Our condo is basically called that because it has a mini-roof in the tree's and because it is roomy. You pretty much have a mini-house in there. All you gotta do is attach an extension chord to a microwave and your set!

Here are some pics of it:

Here is the view:

I don't drive to the blind like that during deer season though:D. I park about a quarter mile away and walk the rest of way. We built three that are identical and put them on different ends of the 50 acre property, I'm in the back and there is a pond to right of me a few hundred yards away. I joked when we put up that if I didn't think it would mess my hunting up I was going to bring out a generator:D. The guy that owns the place said if I wanted to pay the electric he would hardwire it for me. I think he was joking, but I'm not sure. I told him I would rough it:D.

Boy that stand does stick out like a sore thumb though. LOL. Doesn't matter though, the deer are undoubtedly used to it by now. A very nice stand! Looks cozy too. Excellent views and pics. Thanks Paul!

It blends in pretty well with the trees behind from a distance actually. And like you said, it's been there about 4 years, so it's a fixture now. The tree line infront of me is 80 yards a way and the far corner is 150.

The only down side is if one came up close I wouldn't be able to shoot it because of the height and window placement.

Wait a minute... I thought this link was talking about what you eat when you are hunting. How did it make a turn to talking about a deer blind?
Never the less nice blind though, is that a satellite dish I see on the roof?

For opening day, when I know I'm going to stay in my stand all day, I pack a few turky or ham sandwiches in ziploc bags. Bottled water to drink. Sometimes I'll bring a thermos of hot chocolate, but the caffiene just seems to make me pee more, plus I get a bit of a crash after the caffiene wears off...

Because it was late at night and we hi jacked it;).

I personally don't like to eat meat or bran when I'm out for the day. I digest both fairly quick and it could cut my hunt short if you know what I mean[:o].

I don't know why but I like and bring a thermos of double strength chicken bullion. I am 1/3 mile from the house so I can run back for the little things if necessary.

I am in the same boat. I can see the house from the stand.

The best meal I take is deer sausage, a nutty bar and an apple. Sounds weird but it's good. Protein, sugar, carbs.....good for you.

I take powerbars on a morning hunt, nothing on an evening hunt because I'll eat good later, and powerbars, nutrigrain bars, granola bars, and beef jerky on all day hunts. Not to mention water depending on the weather and length of my hunt.
