Leading a running Deer???
 

JMO but Am I just missing something or what? In what book could one or should one be so desperate that he or she needs to shoot at a running animal. I know almost no one that can tell me they can make a proper ethical shot on a running target, walking maybe.

Must be alot of Rambos out there if they can sit back and say yep I hit her at 200 yards at a full run and she dropped after 20 yards.

It would be more like, yepper I shot that doe 4 times at 200 yardswhile at a full run, I clipped its hind end with one round and we had to track it for 2 days before the thing finally died. What a stud. . . . .

WITH A RIFLE ITS ACTUALLY NOT THAT TOUGH OF A SHOT TO HIT A RUNNING DEER FOR SOMEONE EXPERIENCED AT SHOOTIN DEER ON THE RUN. OF THE 25 DEER I HAVE HARVESTED WITH A RIFLE HERE IN PA 75% OF THEM WERE RUNNING. THE REASON FOR RUNNING IS BECAUSE AFTER THE FIRST DAY THE ONLY WAY MY HUNTIN PARTY HUNTS IS BY DOING DEER DRIVES. VERY EFFECTIVE DURIN MIDWEEK HUNTS WHEN ALL THE WEEKEND WARRIORS ARENT IN THE WOODS

I under stand your thoughts. . .I qualified as a markman in the military many years ago and have shot many thousands of rounds. At the end of the day though I cannot and will not ever consider it ethical, wise or smart to shoot a running target. I would figure that tomorrow is another day and perhaps then I would get that proper shot.

With that said,to each his own.

I would start hunting weekdays if the only thing on weekends is a bunch offolks shooting anything with fur on it that runs by, sounds dangerous.Folks must be pretty amazing to be able to sex, button vs doeand age a Deer in a split second while shouldering, acquirng and taking the gun off safety and making sure that the area behind the target is safe from a possible missed round. I for one am very impressed. Sounds pretty darn exciting. My blood would sure be pumping when the woodsare full of people and folks start shooting at running game, holy crap. . . .I wonder if there are any statistics on how many more maimed Deer, injured hunters etc. might happen during this style of hunting vs. spoting an animal, taking your time and making a clean, clear safe shot.[8D]

ONLY 44 HUNTER RELATED INJURIES IN PA IN 2003 THE MOST RECENT I COULD FIND OF THE 44 ONLY 3 FATALITIES. NOT BAD CONSIDERIN PA HAS MORE HUNTERS COMPARED TO AREA TO HUNT THAN ANY OPTHER STATE NOT SURE OF THE EXACT NUMBER BUT THERE IS OVER A MILLION LICENSED HUNTERS IN PA

the only deer i've killed was running.... well trotting. i had a clear shot with a reliable backstop and i knew noone was in the track of the bullet. oh and i only shot once. sounds kinda safe to me.... if the situation presents itself that way of course.

the biggest reason you can notfind anything ina book about shooting at deer on the run is becauseit should not be done. over the years i have found out that the guys shooting at the running deer are not as smart as what the deer leaves laying on the ground. next timeany of you guysfeel the need to shootand cripplea deer running threw the woods. just pack it up and go home.[:@] manwhere do these guys come from?

I’m thankful that all of those who would take 200 yard shot at a running deer are from another state. We have enough of cowbows in the woods now. There are few, very few that could pull off a one shot kill at 200 yards when your life depended on your shot, but at a deer in the wood? RIGHT Sounds like you’re a legend in your own mind.

I consider not sighting in your gun,hunting with a different load than you sighted in with,or shooting at anygame animalthat is farther than you have ever shot targets at, to be much worse than shooting at a running animal.

Shooting a running deer IMHO is not the crime you're making it out to be. I've killed several deer on the run. once you get a certain level of experience, i think it's ok. i killed my buck last year in iowa last year on the run. i dont think it's a shot for beginners; however, taken by a skilled marksmen who's got a few deer under his/her belt, it's a perfect fine shot to take. I dumped a deer at around 235 yards running a couple years ago. not even lying. I was under the impression the deer was wounded, and i did not want a deer to get away wounded to die a painful agonizing death. i corrected for range and the fact the deer was running, and was shocked to see it collapse on the spot and die. this is the only time i'd take the long running shot, when i know the deer is wounded and i need to put it down immediately.
