BEST ALL AROUND CALIBER FOR DEER HUNTING
 

JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT WHAT IS THE BEST ALL AROUND CALIBER TO HUNT WHITETAIL DEERIN YOUR OPINION AND WHY? LETS SAY THE AVERAGE SHOT IS AROUND 200 YARDS.I LIKE THE 270win BECAUSE OF IT'S FLAT SHOOTING AND MODERATE RECOIL ... I MAY NOT HAVE YOUR FAVORITE CALIBER LISTED BUT LETS WORK WITH THESE ..

There is no such thing as the perfect cartridge let alone the perfect caliber.For the record though,any deer that you can kill with a 270win could just as easily be killed with a 25-06 with even less recoil.

drop any short magnums. they only slightly alter performance from regular calibers. nothing more than hype IMO. the .30-30 is nothing more than nostalgia. My goal one day is to use my Grandpa's old Winchester lever action .30-30 to kill a deer, just for nostalgic purposes. other that that, it seriously lacks energy at range. .444 marlin, defintely not a much used caliber, lever actions aren't being used a whole lot these days. 7mm-08 and its twin, the .308 Win, are really great calibers for short action rifles. the .243 is also a good short action caliber for younger hunters. .270 and .30-06 simply can't be beat for deer. you left out the .280 though, which is one of the most underrated of the popular long action calibers. .25-06 is one of those calibers you simply don't see much, but performs well. you could carry on this debate forever. i really feel the .270-.280-.30-06 give you the best versatility for whitetail hunting, offer a great blend of power with great selection for loads.

Actually the 270 win is a cartridge not a caliber.The 270win,270wsm and 270 wby mag are the same caliber,just as the 308win,30-06 and 300winmag are the same caliber.Caliber refers only to bore size while cartridge takes the case into account.

It's not rocket science,just basic terminology.Many people still incorrectly refer to loaded ammunition as bullets.

Not a dime's worth of difference between them in terms of killing whitetails. They all will work, and dead is dead.
