We got aluminum square in an inch or so, and bolted it to the tree angling up as it goes out, bolt it to the end of a 2x4 that is also bolted to the tree and goes straight out. Do this on both sides, then use planks to cover the platform.

Wood stands are a disaster waiting to happen and with the price of metal going up it's about as cheap to buy one already made plus there's the safety factor of home made stands failing. You can buy cheap lock on stands for 39 dollars and ladder stands for around 50 dollars.

we have made several wooden ladder stands and they work great. I will post some pics later for you to look at. They are relatively simple to make. Not too hard to put up (best to have 3 people - we have done it with 2). Do a search for "homemade treestands", "wooden stands", etc., there have been some posts on this in the past.

We usually build a couple of wooden stands a year. Ill try to get a pic soon.

We find 2 trees bout 3-5 feet apart and naila2x4 on each side(make sure its level) then put 2x4s across it so it hangs off a couple of incheson each sides. After your done take a 2x4 and nail it under the ones going across from both trees for support.

I used to build wooden stands but in New Jersey you cannot have wooden stands unless it's your private property.

Besides, I do hunt some private property and I use my ladder stand that I bought a few years ago for a whopping $130 bucks. You can get it a lot cheaper now though if you look.

we make ours with 8 or 10 ft. 2x4 for the ladder. the deck is 3'x4' - this gives plenty of room (we have a 3x3 deck that is ok, but I like the extra space). we then chain the stand to the tree (chain goes from an eyelet in the front, through drilled holes in the back. around the tree and back to another eyelet). chain is tightened by tightening the nuts on the eyelets.
