RE: Hunting rifle
I recently bought a Mossberg ATR 100 rifle in .270 (it is also available in .30-06) at Wal-Mart for $244. It shoots 1.25-1.5" groups off a bench for me with factory ammo (no dies yet to reload .270) and is light, balanced well, and comes with bases for mounting a scope. I mounted a Leupold Vari-X III that I already owned on it with Warne rings. I am quite happy with it.
FWIW, I also saw a Winchester model 70 package at Wal-Mart (in .30-06) for $300, including the scope. I would go for that if I didn't already own good glass.

I would look into one of the Model 70 or Model 700 ADL package deals that wal-mart, or cabelas or dicks has a lot of the time. It was my first rifle and for less than 400 dollars you couldn't beat it...rifle-scope combo

While new is nice, your on a tight budget. Get your self down to some pawn shops, lots of folks on hard times right now. Find one who deals in guns, not just a shop with one or 2 rusted out oldies. Check them out then take some notes on what you like and go to wallies or your sporting good store and get the shooters bible, don't buy it just open it find the gun and get the estimated value. It is likely the pawn shop listed the gun at 10% 20% higher than what's in the book. Make him an offer. If the guy is repuatble he will allow you to buy and shoot with the door open for a return if the gun turns out to have an issue. You could end up with a real nice set up for alot less than a new one.

I would stay far away from the 710's. Like has been said already check out the pawn shops, that's where the best deals are to be had. I would suggest looking at the Savages', Howa's or the Remington 700 ADL. There is nothing wrong with buying a used gun, just be picky and don't settle for just anything. There's also nothing wrong with asking your buddy for help either.

Remington model 700 BDL,you will not go wrong with this choice. Find a bullet in 165gr that your rifle will place 3 shots under an inch at 100 yards and you are good to go for all deer, elk and moose.Best of luck.
