moose moving into hunting area
i have been hunting an area in northern ny with great success for 15 yrs. recently we have had moose move into the area and my hunting success along with the number of deer seen has declined dramatically in the last two years. could this be because of the presence of the moose?

RE: moose moving into hunting area
Jack I have heard that several times over the years but moose and deer share all the turf in northern VT, NH and Maine so I don't think it matters. In areas where they share softwoods and there are large numbers of both species they can really do a number on the browse. The good thing is deer go down to softwoods in winter and moose usually go up to ridges so they winter in different areas.

RE: moose moving into hunting area
It could be, whitetails are easily pushed. Up here many areas hold moose, elk, deer, bear, etc with no issues. That saidI have seen mule deer move into a former whitetail haven and the whitie's vamoosh for a period. The good thing is they do adapt! In time, if the moose have caused the deer to pick new ground some what you'll find them come back if the area holds what they want/need.

RE: moose moving into hunting area
Jack, I hunt in the Catskills and we obviously don't have any moose, but we have seen a steep decline in the whitetail population also. Mostly over the last 3 years. I think it has more to do with a combination of very cold winters and coyotes (mostly coyotes) that are putting a beating on the deer population. But you never know.
Do you see a lot of moose now? I wish we had 'em!! |
