Deer Sighting Survey

Hey everybody, here I am in my fifth year of what started out as a small personal project that I originally intended to use to get a little information to try to convince myself about some preconceived notions about deer movement with respect to moon phases and position. Well, the project has morphed over the years and now it is reaching a point that many have asked for over the years. For the first time, I am going to attempt to correlate deer movement with respect to certain weather conditions. To do this all you have to do is go to www.pineybottom.com (I used to use thehunterseye.com but lost that site). Once there, you will find a form to fill out, just please read the instructions first as it will answer many questions that you might have. At the end of the form is a box to add your zip code or the nearest town. With that information I hope to be able to catagorize the information with respect to different weather conditions. The information on the site is free and the form doesn’t ask for any personal information unless you want to include your email address. The form will likely take less than a minute to fill out. Some of the information I have collected over the years has resulted in graphs like this

Now to answer the most commonly asked question. The percentages are based upon the actual number of hunters reporting at each time zone. Therefore when you see that 10% of the hunters see deer at noon, that is 10% of the hunters who were in the woods hunting at noon.
Thanks in advance for helping out.
Johnnie

RE: Deer Sighting Survey

That is really cool, I filled out a couple of the surveys, but I really couldnt remember all the hunting days so far for sure, so I only did the ones i remembered for sure.
Since you have the info, it would be really cool if you could do one for each month and do the lines for Matured Bucks, Young Bucks, and Does/BBs.....That would be really cool, so someone can see at what time most deer of each type are seen in october, or september, or whenever.
Thanks again, great work!

Thanks for the chart! I have always hunted with the Barometric Presures and Humidity Index. I have over the years of talking with Old Timers and doing my own studies on these, have learned alot about deer, I'm talking about my home state FL.
I have always seen more deer when the barometric pressures have been 30" and dropping, also with the humidity around 40-50%. I also have seen more deer between 6:00am to 9:00am and 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

I did'nt realize the month of Sept. was the best.

Thanks Vogt, I'd never thought about comparing the data that way, in the future I'll give it a shot. Rebel Hog, I can't say that my personal experiences match all of the data that I have put out, but I won't argue with the numbers. The charts you see are made up from right at 4000 days of hunting logged into my website over four years. For those of you that find this interesting, please visit the site and add a little once in a while.

Thanks,
Johnnie

Just a little reminder to include your sightings on my survey. Also, even though the time has changed, do not adjust how you input the data. Just continue inputting at the time you saw deer and I will adjust the inputs so that the timeline is continuous from DST to Standard time.
Thanks,
Johnnie

This data has been reported in studies using radio collared deer. Your graphs mirror that data. In addition, I have done the same with digital surveillance camera data combined with observational data, and the curves are practically identical.

Always nice to see data reproduced. It gives you confidence in the results. Congrats and kudos for all the hard work.
