Plenty of food and cover, but no deer.

I've recently started hunting a chunk of land that was logged about 5 years ago. The resulting new growth created an abundance of browse and thick cover. There are also quite a few nut bearing beech and oak trees thrown in the mix. The puzzling part is that I've seen no deer sign at all. Kind of depressing. I'm seeking out new territory this weekend. There's a WMA nearby that is unique for the region in that the trees are predominantly red oak. Hopefully the deer situation will be a little better there.

Is it possible that there is just so much food for the deer that concentrated sign is hard to come by? What type of other food sources are in the immediate area?

Browse, beech nut, and some acorns. I guess it makes sense that if the food source isn't centralized, the deer won't be either. But how do you locate deer under such conditions?

The areas I have hunted like this is frustrating. Look for crossings. 3 or more logging roads and/or a couple of logging roads crossing on a point/ridge. I have found that the deer will travel these roads and by looking a little closer you should find some trails in between the roads.

What is adjacent to this land? Mature timber? Fields? May try to scout around the egdes of this piece of property.

Hope this helped.
