OK why the difference?
Since their has been posts lately about deer, size, what you look for, etc. I thought I would try to put an end to a question that has baffled me for years. Why do we Canucks or Canadians say a 5 pointer and you US (american) guys call the same deer a 10 pointer? What gives? Do we like to count or multiple by 2? Do you guys like to give the whole picture in one number? What? Why do we have a division here....SAE vs metric? Bag vs.sack?
Any thoughts? Am I ever going to get the answer to this, and solve the worlds #1 Problem<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle> |

RE: OK why the difference?
Im Canadian, I call a 10 a 10! maybe its because I live 5 minutes from Detroit. Then again everyone I know calls it that way, think its just an outwest thing.

RE: OK why the difference?
I AM CANADIAN!!!!! Oh well, if it has 5pts on one side & 5pts on the other then it's a 10 pointer.....i'm not really sure what you are talking about Skeeter.....i've never heard a buck been refered to as a 5 pointer if it has 10 points....what about bucks with 5pts on one side & 4pts on the other....this would be a 9 pointer to me....what would you call it????? Brampton Mike

RE: OK why the difference?
I think it's a western thing! We call a bull elk a 6 pt(1 side), mulie buck a 4 pt etc.

Its a 5x4 and the eye guards dont count........ |
RE: OK why the difference?
Ok. I live in the west. If it has 4 on one side and 4 on the other its a a 4 point no matter how many eyeguards it has. If its 5 on one side 4 on the other its a 5x4. I always thought them southern people counted all the points so they could brag about a bigger number of points.

RE: OK why the difference?
So I guess I lumped it wrong, judging from the resposes. It seems Southern & Eastern US & Ontario Canada (maybe even eastern Canada) call it a 9 pointer, while Northern & Western US and Western Canada call the same deer a 4x5.
Brampton, it nun suprise me you don't rightly know what me be talkin about, us westerns alwise a might bite different than you all east boyz....LOL. This topic obviously wasn't serious by any means, but I have often wondered why the difference. |
RE: OK why the difference?
Even so, Skeeter....we hold no ill will against you westerners....LOL....no matter how many points it has, here's hoping it drops within 10 yds of been hit.........good hunting to all........Brampton Mike

RE: OK why the difference?
Okay here is my two cents worth, my understanding of this was that whitetails all the points were counted, mulies, black tails, and elk were either one side of the rack or if the total was not even a 4X5 or the like.

RE: OK why the difference?
I say it all sounds good to me... I like to say 10 sounds better then 5 in my book... so I use the most I can... So far that's 11, hoping to top that this year.... Good Luck out there...

RE: OK why the difference?
I think that most people like the higher number because it makes their deer sound bigger.Even fish and wildlife use terms such as three point deer or three or six point elk in the hunting regulations in the west.

RE: OK why the difference?
the mississippi is the dividing line. to the west you only count one side of the antlers (not counting brow tines or points less than 1 inch in length) and east of the mississippi you count all points.

RE: OK why the difference?
I have always heard ,at least for the last 50 years(thats as far back as I can remember) that a point is a point is a point,as long as it will hold a ring.
I have been doing it that way for all this time ; "I AIN'T CHANGING NOW" !!!!<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle> I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |
RE: OK why the difference?
I always call'em side by side.....4 x 4, 5 x 4 etc. with the points all having to be at least an inch. I think this is more accurate than saying a 10 point, that could be a standard 4 x 4 with two stickers on one side....that's my take.

RE: OK why the difference?
I saw a set of blacktail horns with 27 points on one side and 23on the other .I wondered what they would call that back east ? Non-typical works for me

RE: OK why the difference?
Well, I kinda live near the British Columbia/Alberta border here in north west Montana, and here we call it a 4 pt( if it has 8)ect. Or we may call it a 4x5 or 5x8, but never would it be a 13 pointer, trust me its not a American thing or Canadian thing its the easterners terminology differs from the westerners, Eh?

RE: OK why the difference?
East....West...well here in Manitoba we're in the middle so you hear both ways of sayin' it.One guy will tell ya he shot a 4 point...the next will say he got an 8.Talk about drivin' ya crazy....heck..we're doing it to ourselves!!!!!:):)
