So I guess I lumped it wrong, judging from the resposes. It seems Southern & Eastern US & Ontario Canada (maybe even eastern Canada) call it a 9 pointer, while Northern & Western US and Western Canada call the same deer a 4x5.

Brampton, it nun suprise me you don't rightly know what me be talkin about, us westerns alwise a might bite different than you all east boyz....LOL.

This topic obviously wasn't serious by any means, but I have often wondered why the difference.

Okay here is my two cents worth, my understanding of this was that whitetails all the points were counted, mulies, black tails, and elk were either one side of the rack or if the total was not even a 4X5 or the like.

I think that most people like the higher number because it makes their deer sound bigger.Even fish and wildlife use terms such as three point deer or three or six point elk in the hunting regulations in the west.

the mississippi is the dividing line. to the west you only count one side of the antlers (not counting brow tines or points less than 1 inch in length) and east of the mississippi you count all points.

I have always heard ,at least for the last 50 years(thats as far back as I can remember) that a point is a point is a point,as long as it will hold a ring.

I have been doing it that way for all this time ; &quot;I AIN'T CHANGING NOW&quot; !!!!<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

I always call'em side by side.....4 x 4, 5 x 4 etc. with the points all having to be at least an inch. I think this is more accurate than saying a 10 point, that could be a standard 4 x 4 with two stickers on one side....that's my take.

Be a stewart of the outdoors. Help to keep our heritage.
