Don't know exactly what year it was, but PA in one year
had 45,000 deer killed by automobiles.

RE: WOW! Deer & car crashes

DARIEN,, CONNECTICUT, Aug. 20 -/E-Wire/-- Friends of Animals (FoA) concluded a nationwide survey into the magnitude, characteristics, and underlying causes of highway collisions between deer and automobiles, and has determined that hunting is an important cause of many deer/auto collisions.

This first-of-its-kind survey represents a thorough analysis of data supplied by participating state wildlife and transportation agencies, supplemented with information from insurance agencies and wildlife biologists.

FoA's president Priscilla Feral says, "FoA's report points to persuasive evidence from 33 reporting U.S. states that indicates a three fold-increase in deer/auto collisions during the months of October, November, and December: Hunting Season.

Each year, nearly 500,000 collisions between deer and automobiles are reported in the United States. Deer are killed in nearly all of these accidents, and more than 100 humans die as well. Another 10,000 humans suffer injuries inflicted by these accidents.

I want to remind you, I havenothing to do with the FoA![:@]

I am sure that the rut has something to do with that also. They have their gaurd down and get hit by cars while chasing does and running from bucks.

the only way a study could link car accidents to hunting is if after you hit a deer, you get out and ask it if it was crossing the road to avoid a hunter.
they cant do a study and find otu msot are in the fall and then pick something else that occurs in the fall and say they are related. you would need specific examples of deer getting hit by cars directly caused by a hunter pushing them out of the woods and into the road.
its personal views being passed off as science.

The study is non-scientific and presumes it's intended findings from the start. Those months are peak rutting months and the deer are moving around more. I wonder how hunters would account for the collisions that occur at night well after hunters are out of the woods? I doubt the study addresses that and those collisions would be directly linked to rutting behavior - not hunting.

FoA sounds like a "Friend of PETA" to me - oh well, I'm griping now... I'll hush.[&:]

Ifferd, what the FoAand the Insurance companiesare trying to say is that the states are at fault for collisions with deer and autos because of Deer Management to increase the deer herds for the sportsman.
That gives the Insurance Companies a reason to increase our insurances on automobiles or are trying to with the help of the FoA.[8D]

I don't know about stat's, but My dad went hunting this evening and I called him when he was on the way home. I asked if he got anything and he said no. Then all of a sudden, he was yelling and cussing like crazy, not something that he usually does. I started freaking out thinking he just flipped the truck or something. Then he says, "I just got one" he hit one on the way home! The deer somehow made it away but messed up the side of the truck like crazy he said, making noises when he turns and everything. Deer can do a lot of damage to cars, be carefull ya'll.

RE: WOW! Deer & car crashes

The increase in Deer vs Auto collisions starts the day farmers start cutting crops(Sept,Oct). Cut down a deers primary food and bedding source and they start moving. Not Diddleee Squat to do with hunting! Same thing happens in Spring when farmers move into fields to plant - not as bad as Fall - but it happens none the less.

Some of these stats are pure Cow Dung to make it appear as though hunters are the primary cause of property damage and human fatalitys.
How About - Early season Dove,Squirrel,Duck hunting - also displace deer long before any gun season starts with exception of Bow.

Maybe a smart attny will file a class action suit someday asking for millions in damages from all the liciensed hunters - Give me a Break!

Looks like around 45,000 hit by cars yearly in Wisconsin. Check out this site.

http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/...er/cardeer.htm

here is a part of the article.

Deer-Vehicle crashes continue to be a major concern for Wisconsin motorists. Annually, approximately 45,000 deer are salvaged with permits or removed from roadways by DNR contractors. The majority of deer-vehicle collisions occur during the months of October and November when deer are most active during the breeding phase. Many collisions also occur during May and June during spring fawning, when yearling deer are seeking out new home ranges.

Seems to me that most of you don't believe that deer management and controlled hunting seasons have increased the deer herds in this country to a tremendous count!
After the Civil War the deer herds were almost wiped out in this country! Do alittle research and see how many deer are estimated to be in the US today!
