Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
I have heard old-timers say... "for every deer you see in the woods,10 others have either seen, smelled or heard you, and you never saw them"....Do you agree with this statement?.....
I am not sure if that number is 10 (could be higher for hunters that ignore the wind etc), but I think there's an awful lot of truth to it. That numberis probably lower for those who hunt from a treestand. |

This fact is what makes hunting so frustrating and challenging and why we love it. |
RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
I agree 100%!
If this wasn't true, there would be a new world record killed every season. If not a FEW killed. |
RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
I agree, if your nose worked as well as thier's you'd smell them before they knew you were there too! LOL

RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
Jimmy, I would say that it depends on the area you
are hunting and I would say that not that many Bucks would be watching you. Maybe 1 or 2 other Bucks might be in the area, but not 10 Bucks. Usally there is 5 or 6 does with one 1 buck, but not 2 or 3 groups in the same area. Deer groups usally stay in1 square mile. I'm an old timer and don't believe that many deer are winding you at the same time. Does are the ones who alarm the Bucks of danger. Now, in the Rut it is different. You will see 3 or4 Bucks chasing a group of Does, but after the rut 5 or 6 Does to 1 Buck. If they have water, food and shelter in that area, they will stay in that area most of thier lives. You can chase them with Dogs into the next county, but they will return to the same spot unless other hunters keep pushing them farther and farther away. I have seen it here on my property for 40yrs and been in the Deer woods for over 50yrs. Good luck this season! |

I'm sure it's true about the downwind side .

RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
I would have not beleievd it except for wha ti experienced last week. I was in my Summit . It wa sstill dark and I was totally still. The pig walked within 10 yds of my tree with no wind blowing. It raise dit's snout up in the air and grunted loudly and moved on. I had no the animals could smell ya up in a tree. There fore yeah. They are probably smelling us walking in the woods.

RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
I definitely think there is a fair number of deer who could be aware of a hunter's presence before the hunter is aware of theirs'. As for 10 to 1.....I doubt it, unless you are a really poor hunter.

RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
well i dont believe it for a few reasons with the exception of still hunting:
1. normally i see 8, 9 or 10 deer each night or morning bowhunting. this would be an accurate number of deer in that area for the population density. if it was even 1 deer for every deer i did not see, that would through the population out of line. 2. when i am hunting from a stand, i do not make any sound or movement that would alert a deer beyond 10-15 yards. combined with hunting the wind correctly, it is extremely difficult for a deer to be alerted to my presence. i'm not going to say it doesnt happen, but i believe it is very rare. seeing mature deer move directly downwind of me and having no clue i am there is all the evidence i need 3. there are a multitude of reasons you may or may not see many deer on any given day; luck, weather, poor location etc... |
RE: Is this statement correct about deer hunting?
I would say that statement is quite true. The number isn't exact of course, but I would say it's close to average when you consider how many hunters there are with varying levels of experience and skill. I know some hunters that likely pass right by nearly every deer they get close to, without ever knowing it. I have walked up on hunters that were being watched by deer, and never had a clue they were being watched by me or the deer. Stand hunters have an advantage in this regard, but I wouldn't doubt that the overall average is close to what you said.
