Is this statement correct about deer hunting?

I have heard old-timers say... "for every deer you see in the woods,10 others have either seen, smelled or heard you, and you never saw them"....Do you agree with this statement?.....

I am not sure if that number is 10 (could be higher for hunters that ignore the wind etc), but I think there's an awful lot of truth to it.

That numberis probably lower for those who hunt from a treestand.

I have hundreds of photos of deer from 3 digital cameras, photos from helicopters, all this is on a high fenced property, and most of these deer are never seen during the hunting season. Just a few weekends ago, my buddies on a high rack on my truck saw 2 deer 10 feet from the the truck that I never saw from the truck.

I absolutely agree with the statement that you do not see most of your deer. This fact is what makes hunting so frustrating and challenging and why we love it.

I agree 100%!

If this wasn't true, there would be a new world record killed every season. If not a FEW killed.

I agree, if your nose worked as well as thier's you'd smell them before they knew you were there too! LOL

Jimmy, I would say that it depends on the area you
are hunting and I would say that not that many Bucks
would be watching you. Maybe 1 or 2 other Bucks
might be in the area, but not 10 Bucks. Usally there is
5 or 6 does with one 1 buck, but not 2 or 3 groups in
the same area. Deer groups usally stay in1 square mile.
I'm an old timer and don't believe that many deer are
winding you at the same time. Does are the ones who
alarm the Bucks of danger.
Now, in the Rut it is different. You will see 3 or4 Bucks
chasing a group of Does, but after the rut 5 or 6
Does to 1 Buck. If they have water, food and shelter in
that area, they will stay in that area most of thier lives.
You can chase them with Dogs into the next county,
but they will return to the same spot unless other hunters
keep pushing them farther and farther away.

I have seen it here on my property for 40yrs and been
in the Deer woods for over 50yrs. Good luck this season!

I would have not beleievd it except for wha ti experienced last week. I was in my Summit . It wa sstill dark and I was totally still. The pig walked within 10 yds of my tree with no wind blowing. It raise dit's snout up in the air and grunted loudly and moved on. I had no the animals could smell ya up in a tree. There fore yeah. They are probably smelling us walking in the woods.

I definitely think there is a fair number of deer who could be aware of a hunter's presence before the hunter is aware of theirs'. As for 10 to 1.....I doubt it, unless you are a really poor hunter.
