RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
My hunting mentor swears by the .270 and .140 grain hornady bullets. I agree. To me this is the ultimate combo for deer.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
Another vote for the 140 grain Hornady BTSP Lt. Mag. IMHO you can't beat it.
|
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I like 130 grain remington core lokt. I have killed 10 or 15 deer with them out to about 100 yards drops them in there tracks.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
Yep! good choice for FL. also!

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I don't really know of a bad one. Just depends on what bullet your rifle likes. (groups best with)
130gr Winchester Ballistic Tips 140gr Winchester AccuBond 130gr Winchester Power Point 130gr Winchester Power Point Plus 130gr Hornady SST's 130gr Remington Core Lokts (or 150gr.) Any of the Federal loads. Personally, in my rifle, the Ballistic Tips were the most accurate. This year I am shooting the AccuBonds. I really can't really think of any .270 bullet that wouldn't work at 150yds. 150yds isn't far for a .270 at all. |
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I used the Federal 130 grains last year and they performed well.
|
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I'll have to agree with most of the previous posts, the 130 or 140 gr. in just about any brand will drop deer effectively with a well placed shot. The 140 gr. with a Boat Tail design will maintain downrange velocities better than the 130 gr.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I would opt against using a ballistic tip because they tend to fall apart to quick if you hit a shoulder or rib. One good bullet that stays together for good is the Combined technology Failsafe. Loaded by winchester in their supreme line. Winchester Supreme Failsafe 140gr. This bullet will penetrate both shoulders on any deer you shoot it at muley or whitetail. It retains near 100 percent of its weight and still expands just as well as every other bullet on the market. Man i love this round. If you use it you will too.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
HORNADY 140 grain.. light magnum BTSP .you cant miss with this
|
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
winchester 130 grain power points. i have taken deer out to 200 yds, w/ no problem. i have taken deer at 30 yds as well and it works well at both distances. just try a bunch of bullets, and whicever ones performs the best, go with it.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I have taken 80+ deer, and most of them with a Ruger M77 Ultra lite 270. I have tried many of the bullets mentioned above, and my gun(which has a 20" light contour barrel)favored 140+ gr bullets, so I ended up shooting Hornady 140 gr BTSP for many years and had great luck with them. My son is currentlyshooting an Encore 270, and he is shooting Winchester 130 gr ballistic silvertips and has had great luck with them. I would suggest picking a couple different bullet weights and see what you gun likes. Good luck with your choice.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
i use 150 grain ballistic silvertips, or 150 core lokt
|
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I use Winchester 130 grain power points

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
My favorite .270 Win Cartridge is empty at my feet whith a dead deer down range... lol IMHO it doesn't matter too much at 150 yards, lots of velocity and energy at that range. Shoot several and see which your rifle likes if you have the time. If you don't have the time I agree with everyone who has posted a response so far.

ORIGINAL: tbuck300wsm Dose anybody shoot 270 cal bullets made by remminton? me and my girlfreind shoot the remmington premier accu tip 130gr, and so far the bullet shoots very good and the range and it kills deer fast. anyone? To the poster, like mentioned anything 130-150 would work, however I prefer premium bullets when hunting vs. standard. My 270 loves almost anything 130gr, 140 gr Failsafes and 150 gr Partition. For your situation 130 or 150 Nosler Partition(Fed. Premium if your buyingFactory)would be a good place to start, while it isn't really required this bullet performs very well on deer at most distances from the likes of a 270 and should you happen to hit shoulder it plows through leavingless meat loss thanmany othercup/core bullets. Seeing your saying 150 yards seems to be thelonger shotno real need for a boattail or polymer tip bullet. The 140gr Failsafes or Barnes TSX would also be a good choices, especially if you like to crowd the front quarters! As always pick the right bullet(s) for the job or your hunting conditions and then let the rifle tell you which one to use. What works for one doesn't always work for another for various reasons....Good Luck |
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
The only Remington bullets that I have tried to use are the Core Lockts. I didn't like them b/c they didn't group very well and they dropped like a brick compared to others I have used.
I also went through two boxes oneday trying to get a good group with them, using my cuz's .270. trying to set his scope. My uncle will use no other bullet other than the core lockt. I'm just not a remington fan. Give me a Winchester or Hornandy. |
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
I like the 140 Hornaday's. The deer I hit went down like they were struck by lightning. But then again most were within 75 yrds:)

ORIGINAL: StrutnBPS The only Remington bullets that I have tried to use are the Core Lockts. I didn't like them b/c they didn't group very well and they dropped like a brick compared to others I have used. but will try to go back out to the range next tuesday and wednesday with some other brands and weights and see what it does now...in any case it's about dead onzero at 100yards with the core-lokt 130's |
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
Before I switched to magnum calibres, I used a .270 or a .30-06, and in both I used Winchester Silvertips....THE ORIGINALS. The 270 I used 130 gr, and I never had a problem once with them...even punching through both shoulders. The original Winchester Silvertip is what you'd call a CONTROLLED EXPANSION bullet. The very few that didn't go all the way through, we found during butchering and they were perfect mushroom shape. This told me that we had very near to or 100% bullet retention, and for knockdown power....THAT is what you want.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
any grain weight for a .270 WILL KILL
|
RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
For deer, at 150 yards, I don't think that it matters what bullet you shoot through your .270 Winchester...as long as it is between 130 and 150 grains. As far as picking out which particular brand and weight of bullet your rifle likes best, again, I don't think it matters too much on game as thin skinned as deer. Every factory soft point loaded in a .270 Winchester should perform just fine on deer. When considering accuracy, you would probably be hard pressed to find a factory load that wouldn't shoot at least a three inch group at 150 yards...and the last time I checked, if you are getting three inch groups at your maximum distance in the area where you are hunting, you will kill that deer every time provided you do your part as the shooter. In short, buy whatever is cheapest and as long as it shoots half way decent then that is what I would use.

RE: Good .270 WIN cardridge ?
Iv'e taken 40 or so with my Winchester model 70- 270 using the Winchester 150 grain. great combo, but I think any of the 130, 140, 150 grain are fine. Just don't gut shoot it, bearly leaves a hole so you will not get any sign. Watched a friend hit a gutshot by the deers humping up when hit and it was a lost cause.Have had a few bullets come appart and blow fragments back into the stomach on a good broadside chest shot, What a mess. I like the flat trejectory best, just put the X where you want the bullet to goand squeeze!!!
