Would you poach ?

A while back there was a topic of would you ever poach or a time when poaching was ok. Many said at no time would they ever poach. I and some others said if it came down to survival we would. The arguement was that in these day and times no one has to poach because you can find food somewhere or the government would take care of you.

In the aftermath of the hurricane would some of you change your mind. It could be a disaster of any kind really doesn't matter. I just think in a life and death situation everyone would poach to survive and if you say you wouldn't your not being truthful with yourself.

I think in a life and death situation that most anybody would resort to anything, including cannibalism to survive. Poaching or illegal huntingwouldn't matter in that kind of situation.

RE: Would you poach ?

really it wouldnt be a real bad plan......if you were really struggling.....instead of pawning off your guns, or ammo, or bow....you could use those weapons and put some food on the table and maybe even sell some to get some cash.....i know you said that the government would take care of you.....but i would rather resort to hunting to put food on the table than going and sitting in a line for food stamps, or waiting for a welfare check.

RE: Would you poach ?

I wouldnt even think twice about "poaching" for food....I think that we have all seen in the wake of the recent disaster in the south, that the government WILL NOT always be there to save the needy. I would take survival matters into my own hands, hands that I CAN depend on.

Not me, I'd be waiting for FEMA to give me my $2000 debit card. I know they'd take care of me - they're professionals.

RE: Would you poach ?

Here in PA if your starving for food all you have to do is talk to the local game warden or DNR officer and they will make sure you get meat on the table. If it comes down to it that you are required to poach then pretty much our government has crumbled and you would need those guns/weapons for more then just hunting!

Yep you better believe it....
This disaster although as horrific as it is ,is nothing compared to a Super Volcanic Eruption that may to happen in Yellow Stone Park..Think about it..If that was to happen the whole Grain Belt of the Continnental U.S.A as well as Canada would be covered in 3ft of Ash..Cattle,Water, Crops would be destroyed..A head of letuce that cost less than a buck to buy now, would probably be as much as $10000.00 after..
No Gov will be there to help..How the hell are they to drop food off
to any survivors when it only takes a 1mm of ash to close an airport
down let alone fly through the stuff anyways..
Everyone will be left fending for themselves if this was to happen..
Its just a guess but I would think probably Looting/Poaching will be the only way to survive that aftermath..

Wheres that dead horse at? We may get hungry enough to eat him on this one!:D
In many ways this national disaster is a big eye openning, wake up call to America! It is bringing out the best, and the worst of mankind! Many people, including many of my own family did not believe that such chaos would happen on American soil!:(Another story in itself!
Now, as to the question of would you poach! That goes right back to what we've seen on TV this past week! Is it looting? Or is it survival? To answer that I'd have to see what you've got in your hands!
Did you kill the first deer that you came across? Or are you carefully caping out a shoulder mount?!!!!
Under normal circumstances no, poaching is not acceptable! There are other ways of feeding the family. Besides, the money you may save poaching, would be more than lost on a fine, or jail time if the Game Warden doesn't buy your story!
Do you think that anyone would be concerned with you eating a gator, or Wood duck, in NO, Mississppi, or Alabama right now? I don't think so!!!!
However, you might just get fined, or jailed, with no sympathy, if you get caught loading your 4 Wheeler into the back of your nice air-conditioned truck, with a deer stapped on the back of it, anywhere the hell else you are in America!
Making a flimsy excuse to poach, is a slap in the face to those who are otherwise just trying to survive!

Only if my life depended on it.

To kill an animal illegally, just for S & G's is wrong. But if I was stranded out in the woods, and out of food....sure I would do what it took to stay alive.

BUt as others have already said, it really is a rare case where someone can't find food legally.

RE: Would you poach ?

If it meant providing for my family of course I would. In my area they don't crack down that hard on people that poach for food. It is the ones that do it for profit that they really go for. Killing an extra deer to feed someone, cheating a bit, or taking game out of season is frowned upon, but not really what they pursue hard. My understanding is they are looking for the guy that kill bunches of them illegally and sell the parts.

if it was a life and death thing, why would you obey a law and die, when you could break the law and live? Laws are not a part of life, they are boundries and/or a foundation of rules to follow, I do not plan on breaking the "rules" unless it HAS to be done. HAS to be done meaning I couldnt live without it.

RE: Would you poach ?

If a person happened to live where the local police and conservation officers knew about his/her family's financial plight, they could make sure that some fresh road kill made it to his/her doorstrep. I know more than a few state troopers and local jurisdiction sherrifs that know the families that are struggling and get goods and services their way....including the occassional deer, rabbit, turkey etc. that may have been road killed ....

In cases when a family lives out in the boonies and is truly destitute for food and protien then I see it as a simple decision. If you have hungry kids there are few courts that will burn you for taking some game without all the papers needed.

RE: Would you poach ?

I would'nt just focus in on poaching . .but no doubt in a survival situation I would become opportunistic. A survival setting is not always in the wilderness, but can be most anywhere. I would however hope that I would not cross over the line and use "surviving" as an excuse to be opportunistic beyond my need to survive. Always my first question would be "is there any legal means that are at my disposal that don't compromise my christian walk and integrity?". I think that there is a defining line between a "no choice" situation and a situation with acceptable choices.

hey dd, do you consider road hunting poaching, J/K, but i know theres a bunch of folks in our area that don't see anything wrong with it[:@], last year me and the wife are headed south on 431, you know where all the bridges are, the P.R. river bridge and all, well we go by one of the fields, and there is a sure nuff dandy 10/12pt standing at the back edge of one of those fields, we had just passed a little small truck that was turnin around in the median, i noticed he had his passenger side window down, its 38 deg., something didn't add up, told my wife he's fixin to bust that buck, she was in dis-belief, so i turn around pull in behind him, and guess what i see, a blue piece of what i'm assuming was a piece of round stock (yea right), he could not hide the gun quick enough, i told him what he was trying to do was highly illegal, and that the owner of the land would prosecute him, he got pretty smart with me and said "man i was just using my scope to check him out" i just said tell yourself whatever you got to believe, a few weeks later i'm 98% sure he was the clown that got arrested over off baily cove, and carl t jones roads, i know you remember the story.....shooting the deer outside the beauty shop, this guy was dumber than he looked

LAST YEAR I WAS SETTING IN A CAFE EATING BREAKFAST WITH A COUPLE OF OTHER GUYS WHEN A YOUNG MAN WALKED IN AND STARTED TELLING US ABOUT A BIG 12 POINT HIS DAD HAD SHOT ...HE TOLD US THAT AFTER HIS DAD SHOT THE BIG DEER THERE WERE 3 OTHERS IN THE FIELD JUST STANDING THERE ...I ASKED HIM WHY HE DIDN'T SHOOT ONE AND HE SAID HE COULDE'NT BECAUSE...... HE WAS THE ONE HOLDING THE LIGHT ;.))

RE: Would you poach ?

If poaching was allow the answer under times is NO . But whentimes got tuff at the house and the food was getting low I will take the words of Hank Williams, JR to heart A country boy will survive. And I will put foot on the table. I do not intend to ask the goverment to take care of me or my family, as long as I am ableI will take care of my family. I do not condone poaching for profit but if some one is doing it to put food on table and they do it on my land I will turn my head and not see it. A good thing we have here in Kentucky is the food for the needed, where local processing place will take in and process deer to give to the needed. Lets us all agree we would do it for food if we needed it. But lets us hope and pray we do not need to.
