Ordinarily I would say a bolt action for their accuracy and reliability.Although it is dependant on what type of area or woods you are hunting and your preferred style of hunting. If you are a still hunter or a tracker you may be better off with a semi or a pump.

Last year, I went pig hunting with a Remington 742 semi-auto in .30-06. Great rifle, I really love it, but this year I'll be taking a Savage 110 bolt in .30-06.

I will go out on a limb and say AUTO[&:]. I agree that a well placed first shot is ideal...but not always right on target. I want to be able to take that second shot fast without having to bring the gun down to get that second bullet off. With that stated I will add that I've never hunted with a bolt so I might be blowing smoke.[&o] I have hunted with a 30-30 lever and I will never do that again. Only because it didn't have a scope and the sights were way way off.[>:]
I always hear about the accuracy difference between a bolt and a semi-auto. Has anyone here every put them side by side on a bench test shoot to test this "theory"? I understand where it is coming from (the automatic bullet ejection moves the barrel around where a bolt doesn't) but I've never seen or heard of actual test firing to prove it....just wondering. I do have a Remington Model 740 30-06 semi-auto on lay-away that will be out soon...

Bolt! I shoot a Weatherby 270 bolt and love the action and accuracy. Take careful aim and you will only shoot once.

ORIGINAL: stubblejumper

The bolt is more reliable and on average more accurate.

I have always hunted with a semi-auto. I have killed afew deer that I would not have killed with a bolt. I have only killed a few deer in excess of 300 yards, and the differance in accuracy is not worth mentioning. I have only shot paper up to 200 yards and can produce 3" groups with both my BAR and R-1. I am not an expert shot, and am sure some people can do better, but I don't know if I could due much better with a bolt. I have also had my gun hangup on occasion but never on the first shot. If I shot a bolt more often I may convert, but I just haven't shot one enough to get used to one.
