I have a .300 Win Mag and I would recomend it... Good shooting caliber.

In my opinion, any of the calibers you mentioned would do the job. I have been a 270 shooter for 20 years, and now my son is too. I am currently shooting a 300 WSM and like it too. I have never owned a Savage rifle but have heard from friends that they are super accurate and very dependable. For the money, you really can't go wrong. Good luck with YOUR decision.

I would go with a .270Win or WSM.

All mentioned calibers will work. I just like the .270.

I have never hunted elk, but I am sure that a .270 with a bonded 150grain bullet would be enough.

Hey Hunter, both on the same day with .270,
33.9% is rifle, 33.9% is ammo and 33.9% is shooter!

I have to disagree with rebel hog on this one. If you give me my 30-06 inside 100 yards with any30-06 ammo (120g-220g) I can kill a deer within 100 yards. I haven't ever seen a factory cartridge in a factory rifle shoot worse than 6" groups at 100 yards, and that will kill a deer.

I would say that its more like:
10% rifle, 10% ammo, and 80% shooter.

BTW...your 101.7% (33.9% + 33.9% + 33.9%) must be for morning people...I just can't seen to find that extra 1.7% lol.

I bought a winchester super shadow with scope from wally world for 389. I was shooting 1 inch groups after the first 6 shots. That was with a larger scope though. Great rifle for the money. I got 7mm wsm. Recoil isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

not sure if this will help, but the Sept 2005 issue of Rifle: Sporting Firearms Journal, available at Walmart :) profiles a test between the Stevens 200 ( a pre accutrigger Savage copy), the Remington 710, both in 30-06 and the MOssberg ATI in .270. Pretty good article.

according to the author, they all shot great (1.5" or under) but the Mossberg in 270 shut in at 3/4". At Walmart that rifle ( in North Texas) is $244, and you could get a Nikon ProStaff for $129 or a Nikon Buckmaster for $199, and that would be just under $500 or less for rifle and scope. a tad more than that Savage, but again another option, to each th eir own

the Mossberg comes with scope bases mounted, and I'd get a set of Leupold PRW rings myself. actually..thinking of going there tomorrow after we pay bills:)

I would go with the 7mm simply because I have one and it's AWESOME. topped with a nikon scope.........................whew doggie.

Nothing wrong with the Walmart rifles, their inexpensive because Walmart has that much clout in the marketplace. I own a Savagepackage rifle(stainless/synthetic) - my only complaint is the recoil pad, or lack of one that came with it - the scope is fine. I have it in 300 WSM. If I had to do it over again, I'd purchase thesame rifle in 308, less recoil and cheaper ammunition.

heya, welcome back to hunting!

unless your eyesight aint the best, you dont need a scope really... so you could get your savage for even less. (unless it doesn't come with standard sights obviously)

and the 30-06 caliber is by far the most versatile for anything you want to hunt in north america, but the calibers you mentionned are all worthy.

I would personally either go with the 270 or the 30-06. I have heard lots of good reviews about the savages!
