Do some take more than they need??
Do you think some hunters kill more deer than they really need?
I only ask because some guys that I work with hunt both Pa and NY, in total a few of them can get 9 deer.... Is this excessive? SUPPORT YOUR SPORT JOIN THE NRA |
RE: Do some take more than they need??
I think when the wildlife biologist set the limits they know that only a very small percentage of hunters will obtain the limit. They look at the herd size and othere factors to make their decisions. Many of the southern states have longer seasons and more liberal bag limits and we still have an overpopulation in many areas.

RE: Do some take more than they need??
I agree with timbercruiser,
In IL we are allowed 2 racked deer. And unlimited does, till the quota is fill for each county. Our bow tags may be used in any part of the state. The report for last year was not nearly the does were harvested as was expected.I wouldnt be surprised if they were to drop the bag limit to one buck next year if it happens again this year.In hopes we hunters start taking more does. It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!! |
RE: Do some take more than they need??
In overpopulated areas I don't have a problem with it. But in places that arn't why would you shoot more deer than you need.

RE: Do some take more than they need??
Actually most hunter's don't NEED any venison, if it's legal and thought out by people who set game limit's , then it's nobody's business what anyone take's , usahunter

As long as it's not wasted, I don't care how many deer people harvest LEGALLY.

RE: Do some take more than they need??
As long as it's legal, I do think some take more than they need and end up throwing it away because it got freezer burnt, I say take what you will use and if a guy want's to keep on hunting great there are good program's out there like hunter's feed the hungry...good luck

RE: Do some take more than they need??
Yes they do, but it of course is not effecting the population.
I know people who by tags for there wives and the wives don't go out. Last year my friends group shot more deer than needed. I told him I would take a deer if they were not all claimed. He told my brother in law to take the extra deer and give it to me. He kept it for his family and I went without venison last year. My brother in law had five deer for his family whichj of course includes my sister |

In Va. we can kill 3 buck and over 100 doe if you are willing to pay for bonus doe permits. I will fill my freezer and then donate any others to Hunters For the Hungry. As long as the meat is not wasted and it is legal I see nothing wrong with taking all you can.

RE: Do some take more than they need??
This year the NY DEC has changed its tagging system. Right away, a hunter can obtain 5 permits by purchasing a license. Also, land owners (farmers) can apply for more tags on a program called DMAPS. I applied for these permits and received 4 antlerless tags to be used throughout the regular season (could get more if I had more acreage). Also, by sending in my DMAPS info, I was allowed to request crop damage permits. The DEC sent me 5 antlerless tags that I was able to use. The "season" for these tags just ended today (Sept 30). I filled 3 of these tags.
So as you can easily see, I could potentially take 14 deer this year. Now I'm down to 9 since the crop damage season is over. Those 3 deer I took have filled my freezer. If I were to take any more deer, I will first give it to my immediate family and a few friends. Then, any leftover or any more deer will go to Hunter For The Hungry. As long as the meat is used, I don't think you can take too many. As I see it, there's always going to be hungry mouths to feed somewhere and the deer will still flourish. -Mike |
RE: Do some take more than they need??
Nine is way more than I need, but I guess it's only excessive if they throw away a bunch of meat to clear the freezer for the next season. I can legally shoot five whitetail and two mule deer, but I'd never eat that much meat.

RE: Do some take more than they need??
You have gotten some good input with your topic. In my oppinion there are two factors, one is how much deer can you accually manage to eat before it spoils and how secure in the deer population. Where I hunt I may only get but one deer in the season and maybe a doe or two. I enjoy unting very much and the fact that I can use the meat during the year is great. As on member said the state determains a good number of deer to be harvested and still is doesn't effect the deer populations. There has been times when I have let good deer pass through. Remember we can help feed the hungery with our kills. Hunters for hunters for the hungry, which is a great cause. KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON! |
RE: Do some take more than they need??
We get one tag for whitetail in Ontario, theres a draw to see if it will be antlered or anterless.
We never hear of people taking too many deer, with party hunting all the tags never get used. Up here the problem is a whole camp will only draw antlered tags and end up poaching does. Do any states have laws about letting game meat go to waste??? Up here its illegal to breast a duck because the legs are going to waste.
