7mm is my caliber of choice. Great caliber for close and get also get out there without worrying. Plenty of different sizes available in factory ammo as well. Also, with the 7mm, if someday you decide you want to go after something more than a whitetail, suck as elk, then you already have the fun, whereas if you end up with a 7mm-08 or a .243, you will need more gun. Good luck with your choice. I shoot a Ruger M77 Mark II in stainless/black and love it and my brother has the same gun with equal satisfaction...although my gun is responsible for more game!

Best Whitetail Hunting Caliber?

My vote goes to the .308 Why?

1. Ammo is easy to find
2. Ammo is cheap
3. Very Accurate
4. Plenty of knockdown
5. Low Recoil

After you compare this caliber using all 5 of the categories, you can find a few that are close, but not as "all around" best caliber to whitetail hunting.

Definitely the 300 Win Mag, hands down the winner! You can down load it for deer or upload for elk or any other game. I use Nosler CT Failsafe bullets and the deer drop where you want them to.

In our group that hunts together in Wisconsin, you see 2 main calibers-7mm-08 and .270 Win. Both are excellent. I myself wield the Remington 700 Mountain DM, great gun, not too small, not too big. It swings nice, i've taken deer out to 250 yards with it, it's got a Leupold Vari X II 3-9X scope. The detachable magazine is a great feature, you can just pop a clip in instead of carrying around loose shells. Loaded with a Hornady 130 grain Interbond, you can't go wrong.

7mm-08 with 140 grain bullets should do the job. Great little gun if you want some to walk with. I dunno about it's ability to hold power at range, but i've seen alot of deer shot with it.

.30-06 and .280 also I highly recommend. The .280 is basically more powerful .270. What's there to say about the .30-06 that hasn't been said already? it speaks for itself.

7mm Mag is a good caliber too. i really think the .30 Magnums are too much gun. Even at range. It's all about shot placement. Having all that energy at ultra long range does nothing if you can't hit the deer.

My vote goes for the .25 caliber family...namely the .25-06 -great all- around caliber in my opinion

Inside of 250 yards: 35 Whelen.... not a deer alive that can take a 225 gr bullet from a Whelen and walk more than a half-step backwards.

Well I shoot a 30-06, so of coarse I am partial to that, but I think another good caliber that I don't really see people mentioning is a 7mm Mag. You can get it down to a 125gr. bullet and it shoots flat as hell.

I have seen a deer taken at about 300 yards with the 7mm-08. To be quite honest, that is pretty damn far to take a shot unless you know what your doing. Again, the 7mm-08 has all the power you need to take deer. My rifle in 7mm-08 is a savage. The gun is light, short and pleasant to carry thru the woods or field. Not trying to sell anyone on the 7mm-08, but for deer it's deadly. Do a google search on the caliber and you will find info.

Local wal-marts also stock the ammo which is about $13 for a box. So ammo isn't a problem cost wise.
