RE: pre rut calls
Well in my limited experience calling I would say doe bleats, or even fawn (this year I plan on an occasional fawn in distress just to see what happens.

Soft social buck grunts, doe grunts(short and higher)and doe bleats. The doe grunt is the best to learn,it will relax deer and all deer had a mother. The best teacher of all is to sit and listen to how the deer relate to each other.

RE: pre rut calls
Well first of all you should never blind call more than one series every 20 minutes or so. Do a different number of bleats for a series from 2-4. Try and not have each one exactly the same length or loudness.
If you see a deer that is nearby but not coming in your direction try a 2 series of bleats, if the deer heads your way do not call again unless it starts to head elsewhere then try a short series again.
If you see a buck and it does not respond to the doe bleat try a soft grunt or two.
The most important things to remember is never call once the deer is headed your way and to not call to often.
