I think that I am actually a better hunter then my mentor, altho I would never say that to him. I have always advocated shooting does, no matter what time of the season (unless mr big is in tow). he says every year he is going to shoot one, and yet I have ever only heard of him shooting at one in 14 yrs. I've shot that many doe in the past year. he is an excellent hunter though and I am forever grateful for him for all his advice and wisdom.

My dad got me into hunting. He spent his youth and a lot of time into his 30's in the woods. Over the last 30 years he hasn't hunted as much but he still posses some outstanding skills. He's a great shot freehand with an open sighted shotgun on a moving animalbut I'm considerably better with a scoped rifle at long distance. In the open, I pick out deer before he sees them but in the woods, he can pick out animals better. I'm catching up to him there as I spend more time bowhunting.

For me it was my grandpa, who really isnt my grandpa (long story), i call him Duke. Anyway ive known Duke all of my life and he really got me started in the outdoors. my dad hunts and all but never forced it upon me, he also is a workaholic and doesnt hunt much, just gun season and turkey season.
anyways Duke isnt as knowledgable about the "New Way" of hunting like i am; he doesnt worry about scent or anything like that, but he has taken some good bucks and many many deer. he is by far a better woodsman but now he cant hunt much caus the cold gets to him too bad. it tears me apart because i know how much he wishes to be out there. He always says im his best hunting partner. whats worse is that he is sick and doesnt think he will make it for many more years

My dad did it without any modern equipment. He did it the old fashion way.
He was a shotgunner and never owned a rifle, so I have a slight advantage
over him in hunting with both.

Well yes and no. My dad got me into hunting at a very early age but back then we mostly duck and dove hunted and then dog hunted for deer. So yes I am a better deer and turkey hunter than he was but mainly because he never did much of either. I never have been and never will be as good of a wing shot as he wasand Iam not nearly as good a waterfowl or quail hunter as he was. Also, he was an awesome fisherman which. Although, I have bass fished for the better part of the last 20 years and he hasn't fished at all, I have not become the fisherman that he justnaturally was. He was just born with an inate ability to find and catch fish of any species. I am now a pretty accomplished angler withseveral tournamnet victories under my belt etc. but I know that if my dad was still fishing that he wouldbeat me a lot more than I would beat him.

My father and step-father taught me to hunt. I'm probably better than either one now, but they grew up during the depression, when there weren't deer and they learned as adults. My advantage is that I started hunting when I was 6 and have had 40 years to learn.
On the other hand, my brother in law who also helped me learn is better than I am. He started hunting in the early 60s and has had a few more years to learn than me. But, I'm catching up with him.

My father and grandfather played equal parts in getting me involved in the sport. They are both good hunters, but I have developed a passion for deer hunting that surpasses theirs. While they enjoy getting out in the woods to relax, and maybe even see some deer on occasion, for me it is an obsession. While I hate to use the word "better", I have been more consistent at taking deer than any of my family members, and have taken bigger bucks as well. A lot of that has to do with time spent in the woods. I will sacrifice almost anything to be in the woods as much as possible during the season, while my father, uncle, and cousin have good jobs that take priority. My grandfather would be right out there with me all the time if he could still get around like he used to. He does get out some though, and enjoys every moment of it.
