ladder stand
 

well i recently jusst bought a new ladder stand for bow season, my climber got stolen. but i was wandering if 15 feet is a good enough height for mostly bow and blackpowder hunting.or would 20 be better but for a ladder stand 20 looks a bit shaky in a ladder stand.any remarks would be helpfull. thanks 1shot

I sit in 15 foot ladder stands all the time and they work fine for me. A 20 foot may be some better as far as scent dispersal, movement, etc, depending on where you hunt. Your sight area may be more limited due to limbs, etc with the 20 foot. Get some hardened steel 3/8 chain and use a big lock on your ladder stand. Use a climber to get under the stand to lock it to the tree making access with a bolt cutter harder to do.

that's a really good idea.

15 feet should be fine as long as you keep our movement to a minimum unless you put a blind up around it. it should work great.

I hunt out of 15' ladder stands and have not had a problem. I love the ladder stands. IMO, they are the best stand out there. I have yet to have a deer "bust" me. Enjoy!!!!

15' works well for me too. I like them for early morning spots because they are easy to climb in the dark.

I don't own one presently , but I have hunted from a friend's 15' ladder stand , and it worked fine . I've had turkeys and deer walk right under it without any sign that they could see me sitting there in my leafy ghillie suit . The stand doesn't have any blind material or other covering .

I took a 173 in P&Y from a 15 ft ladder stand. So am I a fan? :D You bet.

I use hardened 3/8 chain on one of my large stands that is close to a WMA. With the lock and chain secured similar to what timber is saying it would take ladder and a torch to cut thru everthing. If they got thru all that it would take two men and boy to haul it out. Moral of story is don't put cheap chain and lock on. Think like a thief and then make it harder than its worth to steal.

My bro in law built a 18-20' stand only to find out he couldn't see didlee squat due to branches etc. For the area he built stand (alot of Hollys) a 10 -12' stand would have been perfect after a little trimming.

My buddy and I have one 12' stand, three 15' stands and we just bought a 20' stand. I dont' like the 12' at all. The 15' stands work well enough but I wanted to try a 20 footer this year. The price was right at Cabelas so it went up a month ago. It's pretty solid and was easy to put up. Will have to let everyone know how it works out. We have trimmed some shooting lanes so that shouldn't be a problem. If you buy a 15' ladder stand, try to get one that is 15' to the platform. Many of them are 15' to the rail or seat which puts your feet at around 13' high.
